A facelifted B9 A4 with the 2.0T and the seven-speed dual-clutch, and a record that is almost entirely one event: 119 of its 127 complaints were filed in 2025, and nearly all of them describe the MMI screen rebooting on its own — taking the backup camera, navigation and parking sensors down with it for half a minute at a time. The car underneath has three real recalls (rear axle lock nuts, rear axle alignment, a seat-heater cable that can switch off the passenger airbag) that a VIN lookup settles in a minute. Buy this one if the recalls are closed and the MMI stays up for a full 20-minute drive with the car in reverse at least twice; if the screen goes black even once, treat it as a software problem the dealer has not yet solved for this car and price accordingly.

Known Issues for the 2020 Audi A4

The dominant complaint by a wide margin: 91 electrical-system reports, 43 back-over-prevention reports and 9 forward-collision reports, and they are all the same fault. The centre screen goes black, shows the Audi logo and restarts, sometimes every minute or two, and while it is down the rear camera, rear cross-traffic alert, parking sensors, navigation and collision warnings are all unavailable. It arrived as a wave in mid-2025 across 2020-era Audis, which points to a software or telematics-side cause rather than a worn part; owners report dealers reflashing the unit with mixed results. On the test drive, keep the screen on for the whole drive and reverse at least twice with the camera up. Ask the seller whether an MMI software update has been applied and get the repair order.

Recall 21V295 covers 2020–2021 A4 sedans and Allroads among many Audis: a rear axle lock nut can break, letting the rear axle shift out of alignment and causing a loss of control. Dealers replace the lock nuts and any affected bolts. Recall 22V034 followed for the same population — the misalignment can chew through rear tyres unevenly, so dealers inspect the axle, realign it and replace any worn tyres at no charge. Run the VIN on NHTSA's recall lookup; both should show closed. Then look at the inside edge of the rear tyres — feathered or bald inner shoulders on an otherwise decent set is the symptom.

Recall 21V874 covers 2017–2020 A4 sedans and Allroads: the cable joining the seat heater to the passenger occupant-detection mat can chafe or fail, and the car responds by switching the passenger airbag off. The tell is the 'PASSENGER AIRBAG OFF' light staying lit with an adult in the seat, or an airbag warning in the cluster. The fix is a new cable and a new heating mat or seat cover, free. Check the VIN, then sit an adult in the passenger seat and confirm the airbag indicator reads ON before you leave.

Not in this year's NHTSA record, but a familiar item on the EA888 2.0T: the thermostat housing and water pump are plastic, and they weep coolant as they age, usually first as a sweet smell after a drive and pink crust around the housing at the front of the engine. Left alone it becomes a low-coolant warning and an overheat. Look under the engine cover with a flashlight for dried pink residue and check the expansion tank is at the mark; ask when the coolant was last topped up and why.
