Five complaints. That is the whole NHTSA file for the 2019 A4, and it tells you almost nothing — it is the year Audi's A4 sales fell and most of these cars were still under warranty when owners would have complained. It is not a reliability rating. What it does hold is one recall, the passenger-airbag seat cable shared with the 2017–2020 run, and one frightening report of the Pre sense emergency braking slamming on at freeway speed hard enough to injure a passenger. Everything else we would check comes from the 2017 and 2018 records: the 2.0T water pump housing that leaks coolant and the S tronic that needs its fluid. Same parts, same checks. With the recall closed and a dry cooling system, a 2019 is the nicest of the three at a fair price; treat the thin record as silence, not praise.

Recall 21V874 covers the 2019 A4 with the rest of the 2017–2020 run: the cable from the seat heater to the passenger occupant detection system can be damaged, and when it is, the passenger airbag is disabled and a Safety System Malfunction warning comes on. One airbag complaint here, but the earlier years show what it looks like — a light that comes and goes with or without a passenger, and long waits for parts after the January 2022 letters. The fix is a new cable plus a heating mat or seat cover, free. Run the VIN on NHTSA's recall lookup, then put an adult in the passenger seat and confirm the airbag status shows ON.

Pre sense emergency braking fires with nothing ahead; front parking sensors report a malfunctionMedium

Two forward-collision complaints. One is serious: Audi Pre sense braked so hard on a New Jersey freeway that the family thought they had been hit, and a teenage passenger was left with a neck injury. The other is a Front parking aid: malfunction message the dealer struggled to fix. Both live in the radar behind the grille and the sensors in the front bumper, and both are commonly upset by a bumper repair nobody recalibrated. Ask whether the front end has ever been painted or replaced, check the driver-assist menu for anything showing unavailable, and on the drive note any braking you did not ask for.

Fuel tank fault diagnosed the week the factory warranty ran outMedium

One owner bought her lease-return A4 with 36,800 miles, had it inspected, and was told the fuel tank was faulty days after the four-year warranty expired — the complaint does not name the part, and we will not guess. On this generation, a fuel odour and a tank-ventilation warning usually point at the evaporative system rather than the tank itself; the tank is the expensive version. Smell around the rear of the car after it has sat, and ask whether any fuel-system warning has ever appeared. This is one report and a reminder that the warranty ends at four years or 50,000 miles, which most 2019s have now passed.

Water pump and thermostat housing coolant leak — the 2017 and 2018 A4's biggest engine fault, same part hereMedium

Not in this year's five complaints, but the 2019 A4 uses the same EA888 2.0T with the same plastic pump-and-thermostat housing that drops coolant on the earlier years, usually between 26,000 and 60,000 miles. It shows as a low-coolant warning, pink drops under the front of the car, and a reservoir under the minimum line. Look at the front of the block below the thermostat housing for dried pink residue, check the expansion tank cold, and ask for any coolant invoice. A replaced housing is the single best line on a 2019 A4's service history.

S tronic dual-clutch — fluid service due at 40,000 miles, mechatronic unit if neglectedLow

Every 2019 A4 has the seven-speed S tronic. It is a good gearbox when its oil is changed on Audi's 40,000-mile interval and a costly one when it is not: the mechatronic unit is the four-figure failure. Nothing in this year's record, and no reason to expect it on a car with the service done. Creep in traffic and reverse up a slope on the test drive; ask for the receipt.
