Kestrel Take
Three owner complaints and three recall campaigns — so on this year the recalls carry more information than the complaints do, and a three-complaint file says almost nothing about how the car holds up. The campaigns are the part you can act on: a low-pressure fuel pump that can crack and stall the car, an automatic gearbox software fault that can force a hard downshift, and an airbag module that can fire the front bags too hard. All three are free fixes, all three are a VIN lookup away, and a seller who cannot tell you their status has not been paying attention. Underneath that paperwork this is the pre-facelift ND with the 155-horsepower engine, which is still a very good car.
What we checked
Checked against public records, 2026-09-25
NHTSA holds 3 owner complaints for the 2018 Mazda MX-5 Miata, and 3 recall campaigns.
That is too small a record to read a pattern from, so we are not going to pretend otherwise — with numbers this low one owner moves the percentage by a lot. What has been filed is grouped under the transmission and drivetrain (1), electrics and electronics (1), throttle and cruise control (1). Treat those as things to look at, not as the vehicle's known weaknesses. A thin file usually means few of these were sold or few owners filed. It is not evidence the vehicle is trouble-free, and the issues below are our own research rather than a reading of this record.
3 recall campaigns cover this model year. Recalls are repaired free, for any owner, with no time limit on most safety campaigns — but only if someone books it in. Ask the seller to show it was done, or have any dealer check the VIN; it takes them a couple of minutes and costs nothing.
Counts come from the NHTSA complaint and recall database — free, public, and worth checking yourself.
Known Issues for the 2018 Mazda MX-5 Miata
Ranked by wallet impact. These are documented, recurring problems — not freak accidents. How we decide that.
Recall 21V875000 covers 2018 and 2019 MX-5s along with several other Mazdas: the impeller inside the low-pressure fuel pump can crack and swell, and a failed pump means the engine stops. Mazda replaces the pump free of charge, with owner letters mailed in July 2022. A stall in traffic is the reason this one is at the top of the list. Check the VIN on NHTSA's lookup; if it shows open, treat it as a condition of sale rather than something to sort out later.

Recall 19V072000 applies to 2016 to 2019 MX-5s fitted with the automatic: incorrect transmission control module programming can make the car drop a gear on its own and decelerate sharply, and Mazda's filing says the driver may lose control when it does. The fix is a free software reprogramme that started in March 2019. Only automatics are affected — if you are buying a manual, skip this one and spend the attention on the fuel pump campaign instead.

Recall 24V695000 covers 2016 to 2023 MX-5s: the airbag sensor module's software can make the front airbags fire harder than the federal standard allows, which turns a survivable crash into a more injurious one. Dealers reprogramme the module free of charge, with letters mailed November 2024. Owners of later years have filed complaints saying dealers had no tool to perform it for months on end, so confirm the VIN status yourself rather than taking a verbal assurance.

The single power train filing here is a Club manual whose gearbox began whirring in sixth on the way home, then in fifth, then every gear down to second, leaving the owner crawling home on hazards with only first unaffected. That is one car, and one car is not a pattern — but the same six-speed dominates the complaint record on our 2022 to 2024 pages, so it is worth ten minutes. Drive at a steady 50 mph in fifth and in sixth with the radio off and listen for a whine that tracks road speed rather than engine speed.
Repair cost (estimate): $2,500–$4,500 for a replacement manual gearbox

The electrical filing on this year is an owner who had a window regulator fail and spent months trying to get it dealt with. On a convertible the glass drops a few millimetres every time you open the door and rises again as it shuts, so the regulator works far harder than it would on a saloon, and when it goes the window either will not seal against the roof or falls into the door. Open and close both doors several times with the roof up and watch the glass index properly against the seal each time.
Repair cost (estimate): $300–$700 per door fitted

Walk-Away Red Flags
- ✗Either recall 21V875000 or 24V695000 showing open on the VIN lookup
- ✗An automatic whose 19V072000 reprogramme the seller cannot account for
- ✗A whine in fifth or sixth that rises with road speed, not engine speed
- ✗A window that fails to index down and up as the door opens and closes
- ✗Any hesitation or stumble from the engine when pulling away warm
Good Signs
- ✓All three recall campaigns confirmed closed on the NHTSA VIN lookup
- ✓Fuel pump replacement paperwork from a Mazda dealer in the file
- ✓A quiet, steady cruise at 50 mph in both fifth and sixth
- ✓Both door windows indexing cleanly against the roof seal
- ✓Service stamps from a Mazda dealer through the warranty period
