Kestrel Take

The year Mazda revised the engine to 181 horsepower and raised the redline, which is why the 2019 is the ND most people want. The federal record is eleven complaints — a light file, and a light file is not a reliability score. What is in it clusters around one theme: warning lights and assist systems dropping out together, with two owners reporting the electric power steering quitting, one at 65 mph. There is also a fuel pump recall shared with the 2018 that can stall the car outright. Check both recalls on the VIN, drive it with the radio off listening for the assist, and then enjoy the best engine this generation got.

What we checked

Checked against public records, 2026-09-25

NHTSA holds 11 owner complaints for the 2019 Mazda MX-5 Miata, and 2 recall campaigns.

That is too small a record to read a pattern from, so we are not going to pretend otherwise — with numbers this low one owner moves the percentage by a lot. What has been filed is grouped under electrics and electronics (3), steering (2), the brakes (2). Treat those as things to look at, not as the vehicle's known weaknesses. A thin file usually means few of these were sold or few owners filed. It is not evidence the vehicle is trouble-free, and the issues below are our own research rather than a reading of this record.

2 recall campaigns cover this model year. Recalls are repaired free, for any owner, with no time limit on most safety campaigns — but only if someone books it in. Ask the seller to show it was done, or have any dealer check the VIN; it takes them a couple of minutes and costs nothing.

Counts come from the NHTSA complaint and recall database — free, public, and worth checking yourself.

Known Issues for the 2019 Mazda MX-5 Miata

Ranked by wallet impact. These are documented, recurring problems — not freak accidents. How we decide that.

Electric power steering assist drops out while drivingHigh — wallet impact

Two owners describe losing power steering: one at 65 mph, where the electrical system shut down briefly and restarted itself, and the steering was dead again the following morning before coming back on its own. Intermittent is the worst version of this — it will not be on the dash when you look at the car. Two filings on an eleven-complaint record is a small number and we are saying so plainly, but the failure mode is the kind where you find out at the wrong moment. Turn lock to lock at walking pace, listen for the assist motor, and treat any past steering warning as something to be diagnosed before money changes hands.

Repair cost (estimate): $900–$2,200 for an electric power steering column or motor

Low-pressure fuel pump impeller can crack and stall the engine (recall 21V875000)High — wallet impact

Recall 21V875000 covers 2018 and 2019 MX-5s: the impeller inside the low-pressure fuel pump can crack and deform until the pump quits, and the engine stops with it. Mazda replaces the pump at no cost, with owner letters mailed in July 2022. Because the failure strands the car rather than warning you first, this is the single most useful thing to confirm before you buy — the NHTSA VIN lookup answers it in about a minute and costs nothing.

Steering angle sensor faults light up ABS, brake and stability warnings at onceMedium

The largest cluster on this year is three electrical filings, and the clearest of them is an owner whose amber ABS light and red brake light came on together; a shop replaced the steering angle sensor and the lights returned a day later, and nobody could find the cause. Another owner reports the stability system failing to intervene when the rear tyres spun. Ask for the car with a cold dash and watch the warning lights go through their bulb check and then go out; if the ABS or DSC lamp stays lit, a scan tool will name the sensor before you pay for it.

Repair cost (estimate): $300–$900 for a steering angle sensor with calibration

Airbag control module software may deploy the front bags too hard (recall 24V695000)Medium

Recall 24V695000 covers 2016 to 2023 MX-5s: a software error in the airbag sensor module can make the front airbags fire with more force than the federal standard permits, raising the injury risk in a crash. The remedy is a free module reprogramme, with letters mailed November 2024. Owners of the 2020 car have filed complaints saying their dealers had no tool available for months, so check the VIN status yourself and, if it is still open, understand you may wait for an appointment rather than pay for one.

Walk-Away Red Flags

  • ✗Any record of a Power Steering Malfunction message, even a one-off
  • ✗Steering that goes heavy or the assist motor whining at full lock
  • ✗ABS, brake or DSC warning lamps still lit after the bulb check
  • ✗Recall 21V875000 showing open — this one stalls the car
  • ✗Rear wheels spinning up with no stability intervention on a damp road

Good Signs

  • ✓Both recall campaigns shown closed on the NHTSA VIN lookup
  • ✓A dealer invoice for the fuel pump replacement in the paperwork
  • ✓Every dash warning lamp lighting at key-on and going out within seconds
  • ✓Steady, consistent steering weight from lock to lock at walking pace
  • ✓A car with the 181-horsepower engine shown in the service history as oil-changed on interval
