Kestrel Take

Three complaints on the whole model year, which is far too small a file to judge a car by — say it plainly: this is a record nobody filed against, not a record of a car nothing happened to. Two of the three are about the airbag module recall having no fix available rather than about the car itself, and the third is a fuel pump that failed at 65,000 miles and left its owner on a tow truck. The 181-horsepower engine and the six-speed are the good ones, and the 2020 added Apple CarPlay as standard. Check the recall status on the VIN, ask hard about the fuel pump, and then buy on condition and history.

What we checked

Checked against public records, 2026-09-25

NHTSA holds 3 owner complaints for the 2020 Mazda MX-5 Miata, and 1 recall campaign.

That is too small a record to read a pattern from, so we are not going to pretend otherwise — with numbers this low one owner moves the percentage by a lot. What has been filed is grouped under airbags (2), the fuel system (1). Treat those as things to look at, not as the vehicle's known weaknesses. A thin file usually means few of these were sold or few owners filed. It is not evidence the vehicle is trouble-free, and the issues below are our own research rather than a reading of this record.

One recall campaign covers this model year. Recalls are repaired free, for any owner, with no time limit on most safety campaigns — but only if someone books it in. Ask the seller to show it was done, or have any dealer check the VIN; it takes them a couple of minutes and costs nothing.

Counts come from the NHTSA complaint and recall database — free, public, and worth checking yourself.

Known Issues for the 2020 Mazda MX-5 Miata

Ranked by wallet impact. These are documented, recurring problems — not freak accidents. How we decide that.

Airbag module recall 24V695000 is open on many cars and dealers have struggled to close itMedium

Recall 24V695000 covers 2016 to 2023 MX-5s: a software error in the airbag sensor module can make the front airbags deploy with more force than the federal standard allows. Both airbag complaints on this year are owners saying the same thing — Mazda kept sending notices, the dealer kept turning them away because the reprogramming tool was not available, and one owner had been waiting more than four months. The fix itself is free. What you are budgeting is time and persistence, so check the VIN status yourself before you believe a seller who says it was handled.

Low-pressure fuel pump failure that strands the car — and this year is outside the campaignMedium

One owner of a 2020 RF Club lost engine power in rush-hour traffic at 65,000 miles, could not restart, and a mechanic diagnosed a failed fuel pump. This matters because Mazda ran a recall on the cracking low-pressure fuel pump impeller for the 2018 and 2019 MX-5 and several other models — but the 2020 is not in that campaign, so the same repair on this car is yours to pay for. One filing is not a pattern and we are not calling it one. Ask the seller whether the pump has ever been replaced, and treat any history of hot restart trouble or a stumble at low fuel as worth a diagnosis.

Repair cost (estimate): $600–$1,300 for a low-pressure fuel pump fitted

Six-speed manual synchronisers can grind or refuse a gearMedium

Nothing in this year's file says this, and we are flagging it precisely because the file is three complaints deep. On our 2022, 2023 and 2024 pages the same six-speed manual is the single largest complaint cluster, with owners describing grinding into second and third and gearboxes replaced under warranty at low mileage. Whether the 2020 shares the problem is something the public record cannot answer yet. Drive it properly warm, take a firm 2-3 upshift under load and a 3-2 downshift, and walk if either baulks or crunches.

Repair cost (estimate): $2,500–$4,500 for a replacement manual gearbox

Source: not yet checked against public records.

Roof drains block and water collects under the carpetMedium

The soft top drains through narrow tubes behind the seats, and they silt up with leaves and road grit until the water backs up into the footwell and the spare-wheel well. The symptom is a damp carpet edge and a musty cabin with the windows shut, and the damage is to the floor underneath. Press the carpet by the sill with your knuckles before you drive off, and lift the boot floor to check the well is dry. Clearing the tubes is an easy job that pays for itself the first wet week.

Repair cost (estimate): $150–$400 to clear and reseal the drains

Walk-Away Red Flags

  • ✗Recall 24V695000 still showing open on the NHTSA VIN lookup
  • ✗A seller who says the airbag recall was done but has no paperwork
  • ✗Any history of the engine cutting out or refusing a hot restart
  • ✗A crunch or baulk on a firm 2-3 upshift with the gearbox warm
  • ✗Damp carpet at the footwell edge or water in the spare-wheel well

Good Signs

  • ✓Recall 24V695000 confirmed closed on the VIN lookup with a dealer invoice
  • ✓A fuel pump replacement in the service history, done proactively
  • ✓Clean, quiet shifts through all six gears on a properly warm gearbox
  • ✓Roof drains cleared and a hose test leaving the footwell dry
  • ✓Full Mazda service stamps through the factory warranty period
