Kestrel Take

One complaint on the entire model year and one recall campaign. A single filing tells you how few owners went to NHTSA, not how the car held up, and we will not dress it up as a clean record. The one complaint is worth reading anyway: a clutch that melted at speed, with a burning smell and a near-collision, which on a car this light and this often driven hard says more about the previous owner than the design. The 2021 is the mid-life ND with the 181-horsepower engine and, on this year, the improved seats and the standard reversing camera. Buy the history and the clutch feel, not the file.

What we checked

Checked against public records, 2026-09-25

NHTSA holds 1 owner complaint for the 2021 Mazda MX-5 Miata, and 1 recall campaign.

That is too small a record to read a pattern from, so we are not going to pretend otherwise — with numbers this low one owner moves the percentage by a lot. What has been filed is grouped under the transmission and drivetrain (1). Treat those as things to look at, not as the vehicle's known weaknesses. A thin file usually means few of these were sold or few owners filed. It is not evidence the vehicle is trouble-free, and the issues below are our own research rather than a reading of this record.

One recall campaign covers this model year. Recalls are repaired free, for any owner, with no time limit on most safety campaigns — but only if someone books it in. Ask the seller to show it was done, or have any dealer check the VIN; it takes them a couple of minutes and costs nothing.

Counts come from the NHTSA complaint and recall database — free, public, and worth checking yourself.

Known Issues for the 2021 Mazda MX-5 Miata

Ranked by wallet impact. These are documented, recurring problems — not freak accidents. How we decide that.

Clutch can be cooked by hard use — burning smell and loss of driveMedium

The single filing on this year is an owner who lost motive power while driving, smelled burning, nearly caused a collision and was towed to a dealer who found the clutch melted and in need of replacement. One report is not a design fault and we are not calling it one. It is a warning about how these cars are used: a light rear-drive convertible with a short first gear gets launched, and a slipped clutch is the bill that follows. Find the biting point on a hill start — high and vague means a clutch near the end of its life — and smell the cabin after a firm pull away.

Repair cost (estimate): $1,200–$2,200 for a clutch replacement

Airbag control module software can make the front bags deploy too hard (recall 24V695000)Medium

Your 2021 sits inside campaign 24V695000, which sweeps up every MX-5 from 2016 through 2023. What Mazda found was a coding error in the module that decides how hard to inflate the front airbags; set wrong, the bag arrives with more force than the occupant needs, and the harm lands on the person it was meant to protect. Dealers load corrected software at no charge and mailed notices from 7 November 2024. Do the VIN check on nhtsa.gov yourself and keep the printout, because owners of adjacent years spent months on waiting lists for the tool.

Repair cost: $0 with the recall — verify it was performed

Six-speed manual synchronisers can grind or lock you out of a gearMedium

This year's record is one complaint deep, so it cannot speak to the gearbox at all — which is exactly why we are raising it. On our 2022, 2023 and 2024 pages the same six-speed manual is the biggest single cluster, with owners describing grinding into second and third and replacement gearboxes at under 10,000 miles. Nobody has established where the problem starts. Drive this car until the oil is warm, then take a firm 2-3 upshift under throttle and a 3-2 downshift, and let a baulk or a crunch end the conversation.

Repair cost (estimate): $2,500–$4,500 for a replacement manual gearbox

Soft top drains silt up and put water in the footwellMedium

The folding roof sheds rain through small tubes that run down behind the seats, and leaves and grit block them until the water backs up over the sill into the carpet and the spare-wheel well. You will smell it before you see it — a musty cabin with the windows up. Press the carpet at the footwell edge with your knuckles, lift the boot floor, and if either is damp, assume the floor beneath has been wet for a while. Clearing and resealing the tubes is a half-hour job at a shop.

Repair cost (estimate): $150–$400 to clear and reseal the drains

Walk-Away Red Flags

  • ✗A burning smell after a firm pull-away, or a high, vague clutch biting point
  • ✗Engine revs rising without the car accelerating in third or fourth
  • ✗Recall 24V695000 still open on the NHTSA VIN lookup
  • ✗A crunch into second or third once the gearbox is warm
  • ✗Damp carpet at the footwell edge or water in the spare-wheel well

Good Signs

  • ✓A clean hill start with the bite low and predictable on the pedal
  • ✓Recall 24V695000 shown closed, with a dealer invoice to match
  • ✓Firm, quiet shifts through all six gears on a warm gearbox
  • ✓Roof drains cleared and a hose test that leaves the carpet dry
  • ✓Service records showing a single careful owner and regular oil changes
