Kestrel Take

The facelifted GS, the year the turbo four-cylinder GS200t arrived alongside the 350. Ten complaints is a very small file — few owners wrote in, which tells you about filing habits and not about the car — so the strongest thing on the record is not a complaint at all, it is a recall: in June 2026 Lexus told GS owners the in-tank low-pressure fuel pump can fail and stall the engine, and started with interim letters because the remedy was not ready. That is the first thing to check on any 2016 GS you look at, and it is free to check. The highway steering complaint that dominates the 2015 page shows up here too, on a much thinner record.

What we checked

Checked against public records, 2026-09-25

NHTSA holds 10 owner complaints for the 2016 Lexus GS, and 1 recall campaign.

That is too small a record to read a pattern from, so we are not going to pretend otherwise — with numbers this low one owner moves the percentage by a lot. What has been filed is grouped under the fuel system (3), steering (2), the body and structure (1). Treat those as things to look at, not as the vehicle's known weaknesses. A thin file usually means few of these were sold or few owners filed. It is not evidence the vehicle is trouble-free, and the issues below are our own research rather than a reading of this record.

One recall campaign covers this model year. Recalls are repaired free, for any owner, with no time limit on most safety campaigns — but only if someone books it in. Ask the seller to show it was done, or have any dealer check the VIN; it takes them a couple of minutes and costs nothing.

Counts come from the NHTSA complaint and recall database — free, public, and worth checking yourself.

Known Issues for the 2016 Lexus GS

Ranked by wallet impact. These are documented, recurring problems — not freak accidents. How we decide that.

Low-pressure fuel pump can fail and stall the engine (recall 26V222000)High — wallet impact

Recall 26V222000 covers 2016-2020 GS models among others: the low-pressure pump inside the fuel tank can fail, and a failed pump means the engine stops, potentially in traffic. Dealers replace the pump assembly free of charge. Interim letters went out on 5 June 2026 — an interim letter means Lexus has told owners about the risk before the fix is available, so a car can be validly recalled and still waiting. One owner here describes exactly the pattern to listen for: a hum from under the rear seat, then the car cutting out at highway speed and needing a battery reset. Run the VIN through NHTSA's lookup and see whether this campaign is open or closed on this specific car.

Repair cost: $0 with the recall — verify it was performed

Source: NHTSA complaints filed under the fuel system (3); 1 NHTSA recall campaign on this model year.

Steering goes sticky or notchy around center above 60 mphMedium

Two owners here describe the same fault the 2015 page leads with: at 60 mph and up the wheel resists coming off dead-center, feels like it locks, and has to be jerked free, which makes the car swerve. We rank it lower on this year than on the 2015 only because the evidence is thinner — two filings out of ten rather than seven out of nineteen — not because the fault is different or fixed. The check is identical and it costs you nothing: a long, steady highway run with light hands, watching whether the wheel self-centers.

Repair cost (estimate): $1,800–$3,400 for a steering rack, parts and alignment

Source: NHTSA complaints filed under steering (2).

Clear-coat peeling on the roof, and headlight lenses going cloudyLow

One owner reports clear coat failing along the roof edges with discoloured door handles and pillar trim, plus headlight covers that have lost their colour. Cosmetic, not mechanical, but it is money and it is the kind of thing a seller photographs around. Look along the roof rails and the top of the trunk lid in direct light for dulling or lifting, and look at the headlights straight-on for haze. Restoration is cheap; a proper roof respray is not.

Repair cost (estimate): $150–$600 for headlight restoration; a roof and trim respray runs into four figures

Source: NHTSA complaints filed under the body and structure (1).
