Kestrel Take
The last year of this A3, and only sixteen owners ever filed anything — a number that says how few were sold and how few bothered, not that the car is sound. Nine of the sixteen are the passenger occupant detection recall, and almost every one of those owners is angry about the same thing: the free fix existed and Audi had no parts to do it with. Three campaigns apply, all free, all checkable in a minute on the VIN lookup. The two filings that should set your budget are the ones from 2025: both cars lost gears and both needed the mechatronic unit inside the S tronic gearbox. Drive this one in traffic, not just down a smooth road, and make the gearbox take reverse from cold more than once.
What we checked
Checked against public records, 2026-09-25
NHTSA holds 16 owner complaints for the 2020 Audi A3, and 3 recall campaigns.
That is too small a record to read a pattern from, so we are not going to pretend otherwise — with numbers this low one owner moves the percentage by a lot. What has been filed is grouped under airbags (9), the transmission and drivetrain (2), the engine (1). Treat those as things to look at, not as the vehicle's known weaknesses. A thin file usually means few of these were sold or few owners filed. It is not evidence the vehicle is trouble-free, and the issues below are our own research rather than a reading of this record.
3 recall campaigns cover this model year. Recalls are repaired free, for any owner, with no time limit on most safety campaigns — but only if someone books it in. Ask the seller to show it was done, or have any dealer check the VIN; it takes them a couple of minutes and costs nothing.
Counts come from the NHTSA complaint and recall database — free, public, and worth checking yourself.
Known Issues for the 2020 Audi A3
Ranked by wallet impact. These are documented, recurring problems — not freak accidents. How we decide that.
The pressure mat built into the front passenger seat stops registering an occupant, so the car turns the passenger airbag off and chimes or lights the airbag-off warning; one owner here also had the seatbelt reminder sounding for an empty seat. Recall 21V198000 replaces the mat and reprograms its module for free. Five of these nine filings are owners who were told the part simply did not exist yet, so plenty of these cars drove for years unrepaired. Put a passenger in the seat, start the engine, and watch the airbag-off light extinguish before you hand over money.
Repair cost: $0 with the recall — verify it was performed; $700–$1,500 for the sensor mat out of pocket

Both powertrain filings and the lone engine-coded one describe the same thing: the car drops into limp mode, jolts or skips gears, refuses reverse, and the dealer diagnoses the mechatronic unit — the valve body and control electronics inside the seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. All three cars were between 50,000 and 70,000 miles with one owner. This is the repair on this car with four figures attached and it is not covered by any recall. Take-up from a standstill should be smooth and reverse should engage straight away, cold, every time.
Repair cost (estimate): $1,800–$3,500 for a remanufactured mechatronic unit; $400–$700 for the fluid and filter service that should precede it

Recall 24V110000 covers front-wheel-drive A3 sedans and replaces the suction jet pump in the fuel tank because it can leak, and petrol escaping next to something hot is a fire risk. Audi's final owner letters went out on 25 July 2024, which is late in this car's life — a 2020 sold privately may well have changed hands before the owner ever saw one. No 2020 owner filed a fuel complaint, which tells you nothing either way about this particular car. Run the VIN, and while you are at the pump filling it, walk round the back of the car and smell.
Repair cost: $0 with the recall — verify it was performed

This A3 works out tyre pressure by comparing how fast each wheel is turning, so four tyres losing pressure at the same rate — which is exactly what a cold snap does — can pass unnoticed. Recall 22V815000 is a free software update at the dealer, letters mailed 18 November 2022, no parts involved. Have it shown closed, and in the meantime treat the dash light as a bonus rather than a system: buy a $10 gauge and check all four pressures against the sticker in the driver's door jamb once a month.
