Kestrel Take
The updated ND, with the revised stability and limited-slip calibration, the bigger screen and the new headlights — and the new headlights are the thing owners have filed about. Five complaints is a small file on a young car and should be read that way, but it splits cleanly: two on the adaptive front lighting sticking or breaking, two on the manual gearbox refusing third, and a recall covering the traction and stability warning lamp failing to light. The gearbox complaints continue the same story as our 2022 and 2023 pages, so that is where the money risk sits. Drive it warm through every gear, and check the headlights swivel and return at night.
What we checked
Checked against public records, 2026-09-25
NHTSA holds 5 owner complaints for the 2024 Mazda MX-5 Miata, and 1 recall campaign.
That is too small a record to read a pattern from, so we are not going to pretend otherwise — with numbers this low one owner moves the percentage by a lot. What has been filed is grouped under electrics and electronics (2), the transmission and drivetrain (2), the lights (1). Treat those as things to look at, not as the vehicle's known weaknesses. A thin file usually means few of these were sold or few owners filed. It is not evidence the vehicle is trouble-free, and the issues below are our own research rather than a reading of this record.
One recall campaign covers this model year. Recalls are repaired free, for any owner, with no time limit on most safety campaigns — but only if someone books it in. Ask the seller to show it was done, or have any dealer check the VIN; it takes them a couple of minutes and costs nothing.
Counts come from the NHTSA complaint and recall database — free, public, and worth checking yourself.
Known Issues for the 2024 Mazda MX-5 Miata
Ranked by wallet impact. These are documented, recurring problems — not freak accidents. How we decide that.
Owners report the Adaptive Front-lighting System failing: the swivel mechanism inside the headlamp comes off its track, the unit sticks in one position, and the dash shows a Headlight System Malfunction message. Because the light is meant to point into the corner, a stuck unit takes away exactly the field of view you need at night on an unlit road. Check it in the dark: park facing a wall, turn the wheel each way with the lights on, and watch the beams move and return. One owner reports having had it dealt with under warranty, which is worth asking about.
Repair cost (estimate): $700–$1,600 per headlamp assembly fitted

Two of the five filings are the manual transmission. One owner could not get third on the highway and had to double-clutch into it, with a whine loud enough to hear outside the car at 5,700 miles; the gearbox was replaced entirely. Another describes a warning light and a repeated failure when accelerating. This is the same six-speed that accounts for the majority of complaints on our 2022 and 2023 pages, so the 2024 does not look like a clean break from it. Get the oil properly warm, then take firm 2-3 and 3-4 upshifts under throttle — a baulk or a grind is a gearbox, not a technique problem.
Repair cost (estimate): $2,500–$4,500 for a replacement manual gearbox
Source: NHTSA complaints filed under the transmission and drivetrain (2).
Recall 25V336000 covers 2024 and 2025 MX-5s: a software error means the traction control and dynamic stability control indicator may fail to light when it should, so a driver is not told the system has a problem. The remedy is a free replacement of the DSC unit, with letters mailed in July 2025. This is a warning-lamp compliance failure rather than a system that stops working, but the whole point of the lamp is to tell you when something else has gone wrong. Check the VIN, and at key-on watch the DSC lamp light during the bulb check.
Repair cost: $0 with the recall — verify it was performed

One owner on interstate 30 pressed the brake to cancel cruise before roadworks and reports the car lunged forward instead of slowing, with the pedal failing to disengage the system. The usual cause of a cruise control that ignores the brake is the brake-light switch behind the pedal, which is a small and cheap part, and it is easy to check: have someone stand behind the car while you press the pedal and confirm the brake lights come on the moment it moves. One filing is not a pattern, but this one is a minute's work to rule out.
Repair cost (estimate): $100–$400 for a brake-light switch fitted
