Kestrel Take

Same story as the 2010 and in the same proportion: 49 of 85 complaints are fuel odour from a leak at the top of the tank, and no recall covers it, so the bill is yours. What the 2011 adds is a powertrain cluster with teeth — plastic bushings in the automatic's shift linkage that break and leave the car stuck in gear or unable to hold park, plus torque tube rattles — and a rear hatch hinge recall on coupes built between late January and early September 2011. None of that makes this a bad car; the LS3 and the chassis are the reason people keep them. It makes it a car you inspect with a full tank, a cold start and the VIN in your phone.

What we checked

Reconciled against public records, 2026-09-25

NHTSA holds 85 owner complaints for the 2011 Chevrolet Corvette, and 1 recall campaign.

A big number here usually means a lot of these were sold, not that it is a bad vehicle — popular models collect more complaints for the same rate of trouble. So the total on its own says little. What is worth reading is the shape of it. 58% of them are about one thing — the fuel system. That much concentration is a genuine pattern rather than background noise, and it is the first thing to check on any example you look at.

One recall campaign covers this model year. Recalls are repaired free, for any owner, with no time limit on most safety campaigns — but only if someone books it in. Ask the seller to show it was done, or have any dealer check the VIN; it takes them a couple of minutes and costs nothing.

Counts come from the NHTSA complaint and recall database — free, public, and worth checking yourself.

Known Issues for the 2011 Chevrolet Corvette

Ranked by wallet impact. These are documented, recurring problems — not freak accidents. How we decide that.

Gasoline smell after every fill-up — the tank leaks at the pump module flangeHigh — wallet impact

Forty-nine of 85 complaints, more than half the record, and they read alike: fill the tank past half, park in the garage, come back to fumes. Owners and mechanics trace it to a crack or a failed seal where the fuel pump module bolts into the top of the driver's-side tank, and one filing in this cluster reports a fire. GM's coverage for the repair ran about ten years or 120,000 miles and has expired on these cars, so budget for it. Test it deliberately: brim the tank, drive it, park it somewhere enclosed, and come back with your nose.

Repair cost (estimate): $700–$2,400 per tank module including labour

Automatic shift linkage bushings break — stuck in gear, or a car that rolls out of parkHigh — wallet impact

Owners report the plastic grommets connecting the shifter to the transmission crumbling, which on this car means the lever moves and the transmission does not. Filings in this cluster include a car stuck in drive that had to be switched off to stop it, one that would not come out of park in a parking lot, and one that rolled away and ended up in a swamp. Two of the eleven powertrain complaints report a crash. The parts are cheap plastic; the labour and the consequence are not. Shift firmly through every position and confirm the car actually holds park on a slope.

Repair cost (estimate): $150–$700

Marbles-in-a-can rattle from the torque tubeMedium

Also in this cluster: a rattle from under the car at a stoplight or in drive at a standstill, pinned by one owner's mechanic on the torque tube and flex plate bearings — the shaft assembly that joins the engine at the front to the transaxle at the back. The same cluster holds a clutch pedal that stopped returning on a manual car. Listen at idle in gear with the windows down, then in neutral; a noise that changes between the two is driveline, not exhaust, and it is a gearbox-out repair.

Repair cost (estimate): $1,200–$2,800

Source: NHTSA complaints filed under the transmission and drivetrain (11).

Airbag light comes on under acceleration or when the seat is movedMedium

Ten complaints, and owners identified the cause themselves: the connectors under the seats drag on the carpet as the seat slides, and the airbag light appears — sometimes under hard acceleration every single time, sometimes on and off for weeks until it stays on. While it is lit the restraint system is reporting a fault, and one filing in this cluster came after a crash. Cycle the driver's seat to both extremes, then drive it hard enough to load the seat and watch the cluster.

Repair cost (estimate): $150–$1,100 — reseating and securing the connector at the low end, a harness or module at the high end

Rear hatch hinges on coupes built in 2011 (recall)Medium

Recall 11V491000 covers 2011 and 2012 Corvette coupes built from 24 January to 1 September 2011, which failed the federal standard for door and hatch retention: the rear hatch could separate from the car in a crash. Dealers replace both rear hatch hinges at no charge and the campaign opened in October 2011, so most have been done — but a car that sat with a collector may not have been. Run the VIN through NHTSA's lookup; it takes a minute and a targa or convertible is simply not affected.

Repair cost: $0 with the recall — verify it was performed

Walk-Away Red Flags

  • ✗Fuel smell in the garage or cabin once the tank is over half full
  • ✗Shift lever that feels vague or sloppy between park, reverse and drive
  • ✗A rattle at idle in gear that disappears in neutral
  • ✗Airbag light that appears under hard acceleration

Good Signs

  • ✓Fuel pump module or tank flange replaced, with the invoice naming the side
  • ✓Recall 11V491000 shown complete on the NHTSA VIN lookup
  • ✓Shift linkage bushings replaced with a dealer or specialist invoice
  • ✓A car that holds firmly in park on a slope with the brake released
