Kestrel Take

Seven complaints, and four of them — well over half the file — are the six-speed manual gearbox: grinding from second to third, first gear refusing to engage at 2,500 miles, one car on its second replacement transmission before 10,000 miles. The 2023 sits in the middle of the 2022-to-2024 stretch where this shows up most on the record, and Mazda has not recalled it, so the fix has been warranty claims one car at a time. That is the whole decision here. If you are buying a manual, drive it hot and shift it hard before you talk money, and check what warranty is left. Every one of those four filings names the manual gearbox specifically, which is worth knowing if you are weighing an automatic.

What we checked

Checked against public records, 2026-09-25

NHTSA holds 7 owner complaints for the 2023 Mazda MX-5 Miata, and 1 recall campaign.

That is too small a record to read a pattern from, so we are not going to pretend otherwise — with numbers this low one owner moves the percentage by a lot. What has been filed is grouped under the transmission and drivetrain (4), steering (1), airbags (1). Treat those as things to look at, not as the vehicle's known weaknesses. A thin file usually means few of these were sold or few owners filed. It is not evidence the vehicle is trouble-free, and the issues below are our own research rather than a reading of this record.

One recall campaign covers this model year. Recalls are repaired free, for any owner, with no time limit on most safety campaigns — but only if someone books it in. Ask the seller to show it was done, or have any dealer check the VIN; it takes them a couple of minutes and costs nothing.

Counts come from the NHTSA complaint and recall database — free, public, and worth checking yourself.

Known Issues for the 2023 Mazda MX-5 Miata

Ranked by wallet impact. These are documented, recurring problems — not freak accidents. How we decide that.

Manual gearbox synchronisers grind or lock you out of second, third and fourthHigh — wallet impact

Four of the seven filings on this year are the manual transmission. One owner cannot get second to third without a grind and reports others needing whole new gearboxes; another had first gear refuse to engage at about 2,500 miles and had to start in second for a week; a third has had the transmission replaced once and booked in for a second replacement. Warm the oil properly — ten minutes of real driving, not an idle in the driveway — then take firm 2-3 and 3-4 upshifts under throttle and a 3-2 downshift. Any crunch, baulk or refusal is a four-figure repair unless the factory warranty is still live.

Repair cost (estimate): $2,500–$4,500 for a replacement manual gearbox

Steering sticks off-centre once the car is at full operating temperatureMedium

One owner describes the steering feeling sticky at higher speeds once the car is fully warm — it needs a deliberate push to break free of whatever position it is sitting in, though it behaves normally if the wheel is kept moving. That is the classic description of stiction in the electric power steering column, and it is worst exactly where it matters least to notice and most to have: straight-line motorway driving. One filing is one filing. Drive the car warm on a fast road and make small corrections; the wheel should move off centre with even, continuous effort.

Repair cost (estimate): $500–$1,500 for an electric power steering column or motor

Airbag control module can fire the front bags with excessive force (recall 24V695000)Medium

Recall 24V695000 covers 2016 to 2023 MX-5s, so this is the last year it applies: a software error in the airbag sensor module can deploy the front airbags harder than the federal standard permits, which makes a crash more injurious rather than more likely. The reprogramme is free, letters went out in November 2024. The one airbag filing on this year is a crash report where the driver suffered a vertebral fracture — a single case, and not evidence the module caused it, but a reason to have the update done rather than waved through. Check the VIN and take a printed status.

Repair cost: $0 with the recall — verify it was performed

Soft top drains block and soak the footwell carpetMedium

The folding roof sheds rainwater through narrow tubes behind the seats, and they clog with leaves and grit until the water backs up over the sill into the carpet and the spare-wheel well. On a car this young it is a maintenance failure rather than a fault, but it rots a floor quietly and it kills resale. Press the carpet edge at the footwell with your knuckles, lift the boot floor, and smell the cabin with the windows shut. A shop clears and reseals the tubes in about half an hour.

Repair cost (estimate): $150–$400 to clear and reseal the drains

Walk-Away Red Flags

  • ✗A grind or baulk on a 2-3 or 3-4 upshift once the gearbox is hot
  • ✗A gearbox already replaced once — ask why, and what was found
  • ✗Steering that needs a shove to break off centre on a warm motorway run
  • ✗Recall 24V695000 still showing open on the NHTSA VIN lookup
  • ✗Damp carpet at the footwell edge or standing water in the spare-wheel well

Good Signs

  • ✓Clean, firm shifts through every gear after ten minutes of real driving
  • ✓A replacement gearbox fitted under warranty with the dealer paperwork present
  • ✓Even, continuous steering effort off centre at motorway speed
  • ✓Recall 24V695000 confirmed closed with an invoice to match
  • ✓Factory powertrain warranty still running, with the in-service date written down
