Kestrel Take
Four complaints and no recalls on the entire model year — which sounds wonderful until you remember Toyota sold these only in California and Hawaii, in small numbers, mostly on lease. A record this thin means almost nobody filed, not that nothing failed, and it is the wrong thing to base a purchase on. The right thing is the fuelling question. Hydrogen stations have been closing rather than opening, Shell shut its California light-duty hydrogen network in 2024, and a car you cannot fill is scrap no matter how it drives. The mechanical side of a Mirai is a Toyota and generally behaves like one; the eight-year fuel-cell coverage on a 2017 has now run out, and independent shops cannot touch the stack. Before you look at this car at all, map your nearest working station and check it is open today.
What we checked
Checked against public records, 2026-09-25
NHTSA holds 4 owner complaints for the 2017 Toyota Mirai, and no recall campaigns.
That is too small a record to read a pattern from, so we are not going to pretend otherwise — with numbers this low one owner moves the percentage by a lot. What has been filed is grouped under the brakes (1), the driver-assist and automatic braking systems (1), the fuel system (1). Treat those as things to look at, not as the vehicle's known weaknesses. A thin file usually means few of these were sold or few owners filed. It is not evidence the vehicle is trouble-free, and the issues below are our own research rather than a reading of this record.
Counts come from the NHTSA complaint and recall database — free, public, and worth checking yourself.
Known Issues for the 2017 Toyota Mirai
Ranked by wallet impact. These are documented, recurring problems — not freak accidents. How we decide that.
One owner reports the automatic braking slamming on with an empty road ahead and no warning chime, repeatedly, causing whiplash and back injury and nearly causing a crash. That is a single filing, so treat it as something to test rather than a proven pattern on this year. On the drive, take the car past roadside signs, overpasses and parked cars at 35 to 45 mph and see whether it grabs. A Toyota dealer can inspect and recalibrate the millimetre-wave radar and the forward camera, which is cheap; living with phantom braking is not.
Repair cost (estimate): $0–$250 for a dealer inspection and radar and camera recalibration
Source: NHTSA complaints filed under the brakes (1), the driver-assist and automatic braking systems (1).
The single fuel-system filing on this year comes from an owner whose car failed at around 19,700 miles on a California expressway, with the dealer discussing the radiator and the fuel cell; the owner describes the ownership as over. That is one person's experience, not a pattern. But it points at the real structural risk: Toyota's eight-year, 100,000-mile fuel-cell coverage has expired on every 2017, only a handful of dealers are certified to work on the stack, and no independent garage will take it on. Before buying, confirm a fuel-cell-certified Toyota dealer is within reasonable driving distance of you.
Repair cost (estimate): $300–$1,500 for cooling-system and sensor work; a fuel-cell stack repair is dealer-only and can reach five figures — about 27% of what this car is typically worth

This is not in the complaint record and we are labelling it as such — it is a market fact rather than a defect. Hydrogen is sold by the kilogram and California prices have climbed steeply while stations have closed, including Shell's light-duty network in 2024. Toyota originally supplied a prepaid fuel card with these cars; whether any credit remains and whether it transfers to you is a question for Toyota with the VIN in hand, not for the seller. Check the live status of your two nearest stations on the day you go to look at the car.
Repair cost (estimate): $80–$200 per fill at recent California hydrogen prices
