Kestrel Take

865 complaints, 18 fires, seven recalls, on a compact that sells for the price of a phone. The 1.4T's plastic cooling system cracks and leaks, its PCV system fails and pushes oil where it burns, and the brake booster can lose assist in reverse — that last one a recall. A Cruze that has had its cooling system, PCV and the brake recall done is cheap transport. One that has not is a list of $500 jobs waiting to happen.

What we checked

Reconciled against public records, 2026-09-25

NHTSA holds 865 owner complaints for the 2012 Chevrolet Cruze, and 7 recall campaigns.

A big number here usually means a lot of these were sold, not that it is a bad vehicle — popular models collect more complaints for the same rate of trouble. So the total on its own says little. What is worth reading is the shape of it. 36% of them are about one thing — the engine. That much concentration is a genuine pattern rather than background noise, and it is the first thing to check on any example you look at.

7 recall campaigns cover this model year. Recalls are repaired free, for any owner, with no time limit on most safety campaigns — but only if someone books it in. Ask the seller to show it was done, or have any dealer check the VIN; it takes them a couple of minutes and costs nothing.

Counts come from the NHTSA complaint and recall database — free, public, and worth checking yourself.

Known Issues for the 2012 Chevrolet Cruze

Ranked by wallet impact. These are documented, recurring problems — not freak accidents. How we decide that.

1.4T coolant leaks — water outlet, thermostat housing, and the oil leaks that catch fireHigh — wallet impact

312 complaints, 36% of the record, 15 fires. The plastic water outlet and thermostat housing crack and leak, the car overheats, and the smell of coolant is constant. Separately, the valve cover's PCV diaphragm fails and the engine pushes oil out of its seals onto the hot turbo — recall 12V288 added an engine shield because spilled oil was catching fire. Overheating with a sweet smell is the water outlet; a whistle at idle is the PCV.

Repair cost (estimate): $300–$900 for the cooling parts; $150–$400 for a valve cover

Source: NHTSA complaints filed under the engine (312); 7 NHTSA recall campaigns on this model year.

Radio, power steering and lights drop out together — the negative battery cableMedium

197 complaints: 'service power steering', the radio cutting out, warning lights, the trunk opening on its own. On 2011–2014 Cruzes the negative battery cable's connection corrodes and every module sees low voltage; GM issued a special coverage and a service bulletin for the cable. A $60 part that fixes a $2,000 list of symptoms.

Repair cost (estimate): $60–$250

Source: NHTSA complaints filed under electrics and electronics (197).

Brake booster loses assist — especially in reverse (recall)High — wallet impact

Recall 13V360 covers 1.4T automatics: a microswitch in the brake booster's vacuum system can stick and the brakes lose power assist — a hard pedal and a long stop, most often backing up. 152 brake complaints, 27 after a crash, and the 'brakes don't work in reverse' story runs through them. Free repair. Owners report cars outside the recall doing it; a vacuum pump or booster is the out-of-pocket fix.

Repair cost: $0 with the recall — verify it was performed; $300–$700 for a vacuum pump outside it

Source: NHTSA complaints filed under the brakes (152); 7 NHTSA recall campaigns on this model year.

Fuel tank strap welds (recall), driver airbag shorting bar (three recalls)Medium

Recall 12V289: fuel tank strap welds that can fail and let the tank drop. Recalls 12V522, 13V023 and 14V300: the driver frontal airbag's shorting bar can contact the terminals and disable it. All free.

Repair cost: $0 with the recall — verify it was performed

Source: 7 NHTSA recall campaigns on this model year.

Automatic transmission harsh shifts and failure; stability control faultsMedium

137 complaints on the 6T40 automatic — hard shifts, slipping, failures — and 110 under stability control, most of them the same low-voltage electrical fault above triggering StabiliTrak warnings. Check the cable first, then drive it.

Repair cost (estimate): $2,000–$3,500 for a transmission — around 64% of what this car is typically worth

Source: NHTSA complaints filed under the transmission and drivetrain (137), stability control (110).
