Half of everything filed on this car is the PowerShift dual-clutch transmission — a higher share than the 2012, even as the steering complaints fall by two thirds. Twelve recalls. Ford settled a class action and extended clutch and control-module coverage, and owners still describe cars that shudder after three repairs. The manual is a different, decent car. The automatic is only worth having with a replacement transmission and a warranty on it.

A big number here usually means a lot of these were sold, not that it is a bad vehicle — popular models collect more complaints for the same rate of trouble. So the total on its own says little. What is worth reading is the shape of it. 52% of them are about one thing — the transmission and drivetrain. That much concentration is a genuine pattern rather than background noise, and it is the first thing to check on any example you look at.

1,101 complaints, 52% of the record, 17 after a crash. 'Jumpy, catches, slips every single time I drive' — with clutches replaced under recall and the problem back. The transmission control module fails too, taking the power steering, hill assist and speedometer with it. Ford's class-action settlement and warranty extension covered clutches and TCMs on 2012–2016 Focus; both are expired by age now. Manual cars do not have this transmission.

Canister purge valve sticks — stalls and fuel tank damage (recalls), and throttle wiring corrosionHigh — wallet impact

Recalls 18V735 and 26V369 for the evaporative purge valve that can stick and stall the engine or deform the fuel tank — the second redoes incorrect first repairs. Beyond the recall, owners describe the throttle body wiring corroding and the car losing power; a $150 harness repair when caught early.

Electric power steering loss of assistHigh — wallet impact

273 complaints — a third of the 2012's, same fault: the steering gear or its control unit fails and the wheel goes heavy without warning. Ask a Ford dealer whether the VIN carries any extended coverage on the steering gear; without it, it is the full price of a gear.

Door latches (two recalls), hatch lock, ST wiring, block heater — twelve recalls in allMedium

Door latches that do not latch (16V643, 20V331); a hatchback lock that opens on its own (16V698); Focus ST engine wiring that chafes (14V495, 15V813); a block heater that can crack and short (26V011). All free. Twelve recalls is a lot to have open; a car with all twelve closed has been looked after.
