Kestrel Take

3,801 complaints — the most of any car on this site. The first-year third-generation Focus has the DPS6 PowerShift dual-clutch automatic that shudders, slips, and fails, and an electric power steering that quits; together they are 63% of the record and the subject of a class action Ford settled. The car underneath is a good one, and a manual-transmission Focus escapes the worst of it. An automatic is a bet that the clutches and control module have already been replaced. Get that history or walk.

What we checked

Reconciled against public records, 2026-09-25

NHTSA holds 3,801 owner complaints for the 2012 Ford Focus, and 8 recall campaigns.

A big number here usually means a lot of these were sold, not that it is a bad vehicle — popular models collect more complaints for the same rate of trouble. So the total on its own says little. What is worth reading is the shape of it. 38% of them are about one thing — the transmission and drivetrain. That much concentration is a genuine pattern rather than background noise, and it is the first thing to check on any example you look at.

8 recall campaigns cover this model year. Recalls are repaired free, for any owner, with no time limit on most safety campaigns — but only if someone books it in. Ask the seller to show it was done, or have any dealer check the VIN; it takes them a couple of minutes and costs nothing.

Counts come from the NHTSA complaint and recall database — free, public, and worth checking yourself.

Known Issues for the 2012 Ford Focus

Ranked by wallet impact. These are documented, recurring problems — not freak accidents. How we decide that.

PowerShift DPS6 dual-clutch — shudder, slipping, stalling, clutch and module failuresHigh — wallet impact

1,459 complaints, 38% of the record, 31 after a crash. Shudder from a stop, a lurch into gear, loss of drive, then clutch packs and a transmission control module replaced — repeatedly. Ford extended the warranty on the clutch and TCM and settled a class action covering 2012–2016 Focus; both are expired by age now. Owners describe repairs that did not fix it. A manual Focus has none of this.

Repair cost (estimate): $1,800–$3,500 for clutches and a control module — around 64% of what this car is typically worth

Source: NHTSA complaints filed under the transmission and drivetrain (1,459), the engine (505).

Electric power steering fails — steering seizes or goes heavy, 23 crashesHigh — wallet impact

933 complaints. The steering-assist warning comes on and the wheel goes stiff, sometimes when starting the car, sometimes at speed. The fix is the steering gear and its motor. Ask a Ford dealer whether the VIN carries any extended coverage on the steering gear — some do — and whether it has already been used. Without it, this is a four-figure repair.

Repair cost (estimate): $1,200–$2,200 — about 40% of what this car is typically worth

Source: NHTSA complaints filed under steering (933).

Canister purge valve sticks — stalls, no-start, fuel tank deformation (three recalls)High — wallet impact

Recalls 18V735, 19V515 and 26V369: on 2.0L direct-injection engines the evaporative purge valve can stick open, pulling vacuum on the fuel tank until it deforms, and the engine hesitates, stalls, or will not start. The third recall (2026) redoes cars where the first repair was done incorrectly. Free — and it explains a great many of the stalling complaints filed under engine.

Repair cost: $0 with the recall — verify it was performed

Source: NHTSA complaints filed under the engine (505), the fuel system (343); 8 NHTSA recall campaigns on this model year.

Door latches fail to latch, doors open while driving (two recalls)Medium

Recalls 16V643 and 20V331: the door latch pawl spring can break so the door does not latch, or opens while driving. Free latch replacement, all four doors.

Repair cost: $0 with the recall — verify it was performed

Walk-Away Red Flags

  • ✗Any shudder pulling away from a stop
  • ✗A seller who says the transmission "just needs to learn your driving"
  • ✗Steering warning on start-up
  • ✗Recalls open — there are eight

Good Signs

  • ✓A manual transmission
  • ✓Clutch packs and TCM replaced under the extension, with Ford repair orders
  • ✓Steering gear replaced, with the Ford repair order
  • ✓All eight recalls closed
