2019 Toyota Mirai — Should You Buy One?

Typical asking price: $5,000–$11,000. This is one of the more reliable vehicles in its class — here's what to watch for anyway.

Kestrel Take

Four filings across a whole model year, and one of them is an owner writing in to say the problem with his hydrogen car is that he cannot reliably buy hydrogen. That is the honest headline for a used Mirai in 2026: the car is a well-built Toyota with a silent, smooth drivetrain, and the thing that decides whether it is worth owning happens outside the car entirely, at a station that may or may not be open. A four-complaint record tells you how few of these exist and how few owners filed — it is not evidence of reliability and we will not dress it up as any. If you have a working station on your commute, a fuel-cell-certified dealer nearby, and the car is cheap enough that a fuelling desert would not ruin you, it is an interesting buy. Otherwise walk.

What we checked

Checked against public records, 2026-09-25

NHTSA holds 4 owner complaints for the 2019 Toyota Mirai, and no recall campaigns.

That is too small a record to read a pattern from, so we are not going to pretend otherwise — with numbers this low one owner moves the percentage by a lot. What has been filed is grouped under airbags (2), the fuel system (1), steering (1). Treat those as things to look at, not as the vehicle's known weaknesses. A thin file usually means few of these were sold or few owners filed. It is not evidence the vehicle is trouble-free, and the issues below are our own research rather than a reading of this record.

Counts come from the NHTSA complaint and recall database — free, public, and worth checking yourself.

Known Issues for the 2019 Toyota Mirai

Ranked by wallet impact. These are documented, recurring problems — not freak accidents. How we decide that.

Fuelling is the whole gamble: stations are scarce, and the car hates sittingMedium

An owner filed with NHTSA in 2025 purely to report the refuelling situation — too few stations, pumps out of service when you arrive, and a battery that goes flat when the car sits waiting for fuel. Hydrogen retail has contracted rather than grown since these were sold, and a Mirai stranded between working stations is not a car. Do the homework before the test drive: find your two nearest hydrogen stations, check their live status on the day, and work out what a bad week looks like if the closer one goes offline.

Repair cost (estimate): $100–$250 per fill at recent California hydrogen prices

Source: NHTSA complaints filed under the fuel system (1).

Airbag and warning lights traced to wiring under the cabin floorMedium

Both airbag filings on this year come from buyers who had dash warning lights within days of purchase, with the discussion centring on wiring running under the floor of the car and a dealer who first said nothing was wrong. Two complaints is not a pattern, but an SRS light is not something to accept on trust either: an airbag system reporting a fault may not fire in a crash. Sit in the car with the ignition on and watch the airbag light go out after its self-test, and have the system scanned for stored codes rather than cleared.

Repair cost (estimate): $200–$1,200 depending on whether it is a connector under the seat or a harness

Source: NHTSA complaints filed under airbags (2).

The 12-volt battery goes flat if the car is parked for weeksMedium

Not a defect finding — we are labelling this one as coming from general ownership experience rather than the complaint record, though the owner above raises it too. A fuel-cell car parked without fuel still draws on its ordinary 12-volt battery, and a Mirai with a dead 12-volt will not wake up to start its fuel cell at all. If the car you are looking at has been sitting on a lot for months, expect the 12-volt to be tired regardless of what the seller says, and budget for it rather than discovering it on your first cold morning.

Repair cost (estimate): $200–$400

Walk-Away Red Flags

  • ✗Airbag or other warning light lit, or one that comes on within days of purchase
  • ✗A car that has clearly sat unfuelled on a dealer lot for months
  • ✗Nearest hydrogen station showing offline when you check its live status
  • ✗Seller unable to say when the car was last successfully filled

Good Signs

  • ✓A hydrogen station on your normal route, confirmed open the day you look
  • ✓Toyota dealer records showing the fuel cell system inspected
  • ✓Airbag light that goes out on its own after the ignition self-test
  • ✓Fuel card status confirmed by Toyota against the VIN
  • ✓A recently replaced 12-volt battery with the date written on it
