Kestrel Take

One of the last Malibus before GM ended the line, and a record too young to rate: 39 complaints, 32 of them filed in 2026, and 70% of the file is a single fault — the rearview camera going blank — that GM recalled in May 2026 and, as of these filings, could not yet fix for want of parts. Under that are a handful of reports that echo older Malibus: a hard cold shift and a dead pause pulling into traffic from the 1.5T's CVT, Service ESC with 'Engine Power is Reduced' on start-up, and one parked car that rolled down a hotel driveway into two others. Three crashes, no fires. Most of these cars are still inside the bumper-to-bumper warranty, which is the real reason to buy one over a 2022: the turbo and CVT faults that show up on older years cost a 2024 owner nothing yet. Check the camera, cycle the shifter, and buy on the remaining warranty rather than on the thin sheet.

What we checked

Reconciled against public records, 2026-09-25

NHTSA holds 39 owner complaints for the 2024 Chevrolet Malibu, and 2 recall campaigns.

A big number here usually means a lot of these were sold, not that it is a bad vehicle — popular models collect more complaints for the same rate of trouble. So the total on its own says little. What is worth reading is the shape of it. 44% of them are about one thing — electrics and electronics. That much concentration is a genuine pattern rather than background noise, and it is the first thing to check on any example you look at.

2 recall campaigns cover this model year. Recalls are repaired free, for any owner, with no time limit on most safety campaigns — but only if someone books it in. Ask the seller to show it was done, or have any dealer check the VIN; it takes them a couple of minutes and costs nothing.

Counts come from the NHTSA complaint and recall database — free, public, and worth checking yourself.

Known Issues for the 2024 Chevrolet Malibu

Ranked by wallet impact. These are documented, recurring problems — not freak accidents. How we decide that.

Rearview camera blank, distorted, or stuck on while driving — recall 26V212, parts not yet availableMedium

27 of the 39 complaints are the camera, split between the electrical and back-over clusters: a black screen in reverse with 'service' on it, a picture that stays up for minutes after the car is in drive, and a string of near-identical reports of a recall letter received and a dealer with no part to fit. Recall 26V212 covers 2023–2025 Malibus and the fix is a free inspection and replacement camera, once GM ships them. For a buyer that means two checks, not one: whether the campaign shows closed on the VIN, and whether the camera actually works today, in reverse, in bright light and shade. A 2024 with a working camera and the campaign closed is done; one with the campaign open is a car that will need a dealer visit you do not control the timing of.

Repair cost: $0 with the recall — verify it was performed

Dead pause pulling into traffic, hard cold shifts, and one parked car that rolled away — CVT and shifter reportsMedium

Five powertrain complaints and one crash: a car that sat for several seconds after the light turned green before it moved, a CVT that jerks hard on a cold start and then will not 'get up and go' with no codes stored, and a 2024 parked and switched off outside a hotel that rolled down the driveway into two parked cars moments later. That last one is the failure mode of the shifter park switch that plagues 2019–2022 Malibus, and it is why we ask you to shut the car off from park several times and confirm the dash does not ask you to shift to park. Too few to call a pattern on this year, and all of it should be warranty work; the test drive is the check, cold, with three brisk pulls from a stop.

Repair cost (estimate): $250–$700 for the shifter assembly; $200–$400 for a CVT fluid service

Source: NHTSA complaints filed under the transmission and drivetrain (5).

Service ESC, parking-brake and ignition lights on start-up, then 'Engine Power is Reduced' — a no-start that clears on restartMedium

A thread that runs through the electrical and powertrain clusters: press the start button with your foot on the brake and the car either does not start or lights up Service ESC, the parking-brake light and the ignition light, sometimes followed by 'Engine Power is Reduced' a moment into the drive; a restart usually clears it. Dealers have told owners they could not reproduce it. On this generation that mix of lights tends to point at a body-control module, a brake-pedal position sensor or a poor ground rather than the stability system itself. Start the car three or four times during the viewing, cold and warm, and note every light that stays on after the bulb check.

Repair cost (estimate): $100–$500 for a pedal sensor, ground repair or module reprogram

Wrong owner's manual in the glove box — misses the child-seat anchor instructions (recall 24V575)Low

Recall 24V575 covers 2024 Malibus that were shipped with the wrong owner's manual, which fails a federal standard because the manual has to describe the child restraint anchorages and other safety functions for this exact car. Dealers hand out the correct manual free; letters went out in August 2024. It costs nothing and it is not a mechanical fault, but it is on the VIN lookup and a seller who has not bothered with it probably has not bothered with the camera recall either. Open the glove box and check the cover says 2024 Malibu.

Repair cost: $0 with the recall — verify it was performed

  • ✗Dash asking you to shift to park when the lever is already there
  • ✗Recall 26V212 open on the NHTSA VIN lookup

Good Signs

  • ✓Recall 26V212 closed with a replacement camera fitted, and a clear picture in reverse

  • ✓Shuts off cleanly from park five times without a message
