Kestrel Take
The refreshed Bolt — new dash, new seats, a lower sticker — launched straight into the battery recall, and half of its 59 complaints are owners waiting on it in 2021 and 2022. Seven recalls on the record: three for the battery, two for airbags that may not deploy properly, two for the seat belt pretensioner carpet fire. Zero fires reported on this year, three crashes. What separates a good 2022 from a bad one is paperwork and one behaviour: whether every campaign is closed through the 2024 battery follow-ups, and whether the car has ever lost propulsion on the road, which a fifth of the record describes and which tends to show up in dealer history as a tow. The 8-year/100,000-mile battery and drive-unit warranty still has years to run on a 2022, which makes this the Bolt where a defect is most likely to be GM's bill rather than yours. Buy one with a full recall history and a clean, strong pull to freeway speed.
What we checked
Reconciled against public records, 2026-09-25
NHTSA holds 59 owner complaints for the 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EV, and 7 recall campaigns.
A big number here usually means a lot of these were sold, not that it is a bad vehicle — popular models collect more complaints for the same rate of trouble. So the total on its own says little. What is worth reading is the shape of it. 49% of them are about one thing — electrics and electronics. That much concentration is a genuine pattern rather than background noise, and it is the first thing to check on any example you look at.
7 recall campaigns cover this model year. Recalls are repaired free, for any owner, with no time limit on most safety campaigns — but only if someone books it in. Ask the seller to show it was done, or have any dealer check the VIN; it takes them a couple of minutes and costs nothing.
Counts come from the NHTSA complaint and recall database — free, public, and worth checking yourself.
Known Issues for the 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EV
Ranked by wallet impact. These are documented, recurring problems — not freak accidents. How we decide that.
Recall 21V650 covers 2020–2022 Bolts for LG cells with a torn anode tab and folded separator that can ignite at full charge. The 2022's remedy was mostly GM's advanced diagnostic software — an 80% charge cap for roughly 6,200 miles while the car watches for a failing module, with modules or packs replaced only where a fault is found — and then recalls 24V481 and 24V812 for cars where that software was installed incorrectly or failed to install. The complaints here are almost all about the wait: parts unavailable, no ETA, charge codes sent to the smart charger. One owner's car was still sitting at the dealer for a battery in 2025. Check the VIN for all three campaigns and confirm the charge limit has been released to 100%.
Repair cost: $0 with the recall — verify it was performed; $12,000–$18,000 for a pack outside warranty — more than this car is typically worth

Eleven FUEL SYSTEM and ten POWER TRAIN complaints overlap on one experience: a stutter, then 'propulsion power reduced', then 'speed reduced to 50 mph… 30 mph', and the car coasting across traffic with the display suddenly showing 0% and 0 miles. Some would not shift or shut off afterwards and needed the 12V disconnected by the tow driver. Diagnoses in the record range from a defective battery module, to a P0BBD battery code with the car refusing to charge past 30%, to a 'Service Transmission' message followed by a failed drive unit. One 2026 report is a front lower ball joint shearing at parking speed and the axle pulling out. On a 2022 all of this should still be inside the 8-year/100,000-mile propulsion warranty, so the cost to you is the diagnosis and the inconvenience — but ask the seller straight out whether the car has ever been towed, and check the dealer history on the VIN.
Repair cost (estimate): $150–$300 for the dealer diagnostic; a drive unit or battery module outside warranty runs $4,000–$18,000 — more than this car is typically worth

Recall 21V517: one of the two bolts holding the driver's airbag to the steering wheel may be missing or loose on early 2022 builds, so the bag may not deploy correctly; dealers inspect and tighten or replace the assembly. Recall 23V567: some 2022–2023 dash panels were made without the scored line on the underside that lets the passenger airbag tear through, and the fix is a whole new instrument panel — a longer job, with owners here complaining about parts delays. Neither shows any symptom in the car. Both should be closed on the VIN lookup; the instrument panel one is the one most likely still open.
Repair cost: $0 with the recall — verify it was performed

Recalls 22V930 and 23V845 cover every 2017–2023 Bolt: when a front pretensioner fires in a collision, its exhaust can ignite carpet fibers at the base of the B-pillar. The remedy is metal foil under the carpet and, where needed, a cover on the pretensioner. The second campaign exists because some cars were done wrong the first time, so a VIN that shows only 22V930 closed may still be due the re-inspection. Ten minutes at a dealer, free — but only a dealer can do it, so a car that has never been back since sale probably has it open.

Walk-Away Red Flags
- ✗Target Charge Level still capped at 80% — the diagnostic software is still in its watch window, or was never completed
- ✗Any of 21V650, 24V481 or 24V812 open on the VIN lookup
- ✗'Propulsion Power Reduced' or 'Service Transmission' on the display at any point, even briefly
- ✗Seller admits a tow, or the dealer history shows a drive unit, battery module or high-voltage fuse replaced
- ✗Battery warning light that comes and goes in wet weather
Good Signs
- ✓All seven recalls closed on the VIN lookup, with the instrument panel replacement done
- ✓Charge limit restored to 100% by the dealer, with the diagnostic-period paperwork
- ✓A full-throttle on-ramp pull to 70 mph with the power gauge steady and every warning light dark
- ✓Estimated range in the 240–260 mile band on a fresh 100% charge in mild weather
- ✓Original-owner dealer service history on the VIN, so any propulsion visit is on the record
