Kestrel Take
The final year of the NC, built in small numbers while the new car was being launched, and the federal record holds a single complaint — one owner's filing, indexed twice under two components. One complaint is not evidence of a good car; it is evidence that almost nobody filed. Everything useful about this purchase has to come from the car in front of you: the roof, the underside and the service history. Mechanically it is the same proven 2.0-litre and six-speed as the years before it, which is the reason to want one. Get it on a lift, and pay a shop to look at the sills and the floor before you agree a price.
What we checked
Checked against public records, 2026-09-25
NHTSA holds 1 owner complaint for the 2015 Mazda MX-5 Miata, and no recall campaigns.
That is too small a record to read a pattern from, so we are not going to pretend otherwise — with numbers this low one owner moves the percentage by a lot. What has been filed is grouped under the brakes (1), the fuel system (1). Treat those as things to look at, not as the vehicle's known weaknesses. A thin file usually means few of these were sold or few owners filed. It is not evidence the vehicle is trouble-free, and the issues below are our own research rather than a reading of this record.
Counts come from the NHTSA complaint and recall database — free, public, and worth checking yourself.
Known Issues for the 2015 Mazda MX-5 Miata
Ranked by wallet impact. These are documented, recurring problems — not freak accidents. How we decide that.
The folding roof sheds rainwater through narrow tubes that run down behind the seats. Leaf litter blocks them, the water backs up over the sill and soaks into the footwell carpet and the spare-wheel well, where it rusts the floor from the inside. Check by pressing the carpet edge with your knuckles and sniffing the cabin with the windows up. A shop clears the tubes in half an hour; a floor left wet for two winters is a different bill.
Repair cost (estimate): $150–$400 to clear and reseal the drains

Hardtop cars fold the roof away on an electric motor and a chain of position sensors, and a single sensor out of adjustment stops the sequence with the roof neither up nor down. Ask for two full cycles, both directions, before money is discussed — it should be one continuous quiet sweep with no pause, no clunk and no warning chime left on the dash afterwards. A roof stuck open in weather is what makes this expensive rather than annoying.
Repair cost (estimate): $500–$2,500

Salt does its work from the inside out on this generation. The lip of the rear wheel arch and the closing seam along the bottom of each sill are where it surfaces first, usually years after the metal behind has already thinned. Do it by feel rather than by eye: run a fingertip round the inside of each arch lip and along the underside of the doors. Paint that feels smooth is sound; a gritty, scaly ridge is not, and a blister means the steel is already gone beneath it. Panel and welding work on a car at this money can cost more than the difference between a good example and a poor one, which is the whole reason to spend ten minutes on your knees before you spend anything else.
Repair cost (estimate): $600–$3,000 depending on how many panels are involved

Drivers of Mazdas using this 2.0-litre MZR engine family often describe a short mechanical tick or chatter at the very first turn of the key on a cold morning, fading within a second or two as oil pressure reaches the top of the head. The part usually blamed is the intake camshaft phaser. We hold no Mazda bulletin confirming that for this model year, so weigh it as owner talk rather than a documented defect, and weigh it lightly. The practical point is simple: arrange to be there for the first start of the day. A seller who has the engine warm when you pull up has removed the only chance you had to hear it.
Repair cost (estimate): $400–$1,100

Walk-Away Red Flags
- ✗Bubbling or blistered paint on the rear arch lips or lower door edges
- ✗Damp carpet at the footwell edge, or a musty smell with the windows shut
- ✗A hardtop that pauses, clunks or leaves a warning chime after cycling
- ✗A rattle from the front of the engine for a second or two on a cold start
- ✗Fresh underseal sprayed over the sills, hiding what is underneath
Good Signs
- ✓Sound painted steel inside the rear arch lips on a car from a salted state
- ✓Roof drains cleared and a hose test that leaves the carpet dry
- ✓The hardtop run fully open and closed twice while you watched
- ✓Oil changes documented at sensible intervals with the invoices present
- ✓A recent independent inspection report the seller hands over unprompted
