Kestrel Take

Eleven complaints for a whole model year is a thin record, and a thin record is a measure of how many people filed, not of how good the car is — we will not read it as a clean bill of health. What is in there is consistent with the years either side: the door handle touch pads give up, usually one door at a time, at mileages as low as 30,000. The 2025 ten-speed transmission recall stops at the 2021 model year, so this car does not carry it, and that is a real reason to prefer a 2022 over a 2020 or 2021 — but it does not mean the same gearbox cannot wear. Drive it from cold, open every door from outside, and run the VIN.

What we checked

Checked against public records, 2026-09-25

NHTSA holds 11 owner complaints for the 2022 Cadillac CT5, and 2 recall campaigns.

That is too small a record to read a pattern from, so we are not going to pretend otherwise — with numbers this low one owner moves the percentage by a lot. What has been filed is grouped under the body and structure (3), tyres (2), electrics and electronics (2). Treat those as things to look at, not as the vehicle's known weaknesses. A thin file usually means few of these were sold or few owners filed. It is not evidence the vehicle is trouble-free, and the issues below are our own research rather than a reading of this record.

2 recall campaigns cover this model year. Recalls are repaired free, for any owner, with no time limit on most safety campaigns — but only if someone books it in. Ask the seller to show it was done, or have any dealer check the VIN; it takes them a couple of minutes and costs nothing.

Counts come from the NHTSA complaint and recall database — free, public, and worth checking yourself.

Known Issues for the 2022 Cadillac CT5

Ranked by wallet impact. These are documented, recurring problems — not freak accidents. How we decide that.

Door handle touch pads stop working, leaving the door shut from outsideMedium

Five of the eleven filings are this, split between the structure and electrical categories: the pressure pad in the flush outside handle stops making its connection, so the door will not open from the kerb. Owners describe pressing a specific corner of the pad, then pressing repeatedly, then nothing — and getting in through another door or the inside latch. Two owners had already replaced two handles before a third failed. Check this first at the viewing, on all four doors, from a normal standing position rather than by leaning on the car.

Repair cost (estimate): $400–$900 per door handle assembly

Roof rail curtain airbags may have been fitted wrong at the factory (recall 21V611000)Medium

Recall 21V611000 reaches into the 2022 model year for the CT4 and CT5: the roof rail side-curtain airbags may not have been installed correctly, which could mean they deploy the wrong way in a side impact. Dealers inspect both sides and reinstall where needed, free of charge. Since the hardware sits above the headliner, there is nothing to look at and nothing to test — the entire check is the NHTSA VIN lookup, which is free and takes two minutes on a phone standing next to the car.

Repair cost: $0 with the recall — verify it was performed

Daytime running lights may fail to dim, glaring at oncoming drivers (recall 22V903000)Low

Recall 22V903000 covers 2020-2023 CT4 and CT5 among other GM vehicles: the daytime running lights may not deactivate when they are supposed to, creating glare that reduces other drivers' visibility. The body control module software is reflashed at a dealer or pushed over the air, free of charge. Low stakes for your wallet, but useful as a tell — an open software campaign on a 2022 usually means the car has skipped dealer visits, and this generation gets several of its fixes as software.

Walk-Away Red Flags

  • ✗A door handle pad that needs a second or third press to release
  • ✗Worn or discoloured patches on the outside handle pads
  • ✗Shudder or jerk between gears at 40-65 mph on a cold engine
  • ✗Front daytime running lights blazing at night with headlights on
  • ✗Summer tyres worn unevenly on the inside shoulders

Good Signs

  • ✓Both recall campaigns shown complete on the NHTSA VIN lookup
  • ✓All four doors opening on the first press of the outside handle
  • ✓Dated invoices for any door handle assemblies already replaced
  • ✓Matching tyres with consistent tread depth across an axle
  • ✓Dealer service records showing software updates applied
