Kestrel Take
The sedan ended with 2018, so every 2019 ATS is a coupe — 2.0L turbo or 3.6L V6 with the 8-speed, or the twin-turbo ATS-V — and it was built in small numbers. NHTSA holds two complaints and no recalls for it, which is a record too small to say anything about the car, and we will not pretend it does. What we can say is what carries over: the 2017–2018 ATS got a recall for an electric power steering gear that quits mid-drive, the 2016–2018 records are full of the 8-speed's shudder around 45 mph and rear differentials that growl, and the CUE screen has cracked under the glass on every year since 2013. The 2019 is not named in the steering recall, but the one detailed complaint on this year is a car that intermittently loses power, accelerates on its own and goes hard to steer, unresolved since 12,800 miles. Buy this coupe the way you would a 2018 sedan — steering test at a standstill, a steady 45-mph cruise, the rear end listened to with the radio off — and on the remaining factory powertrain warranty, not on the silence of the file.
What we checked
Checked against public records, 2026-09-25
NHTSA holds 2 owner complaints for the 2019 Cadillac ATS, and no recall campaigns.
That is too small a record to read a pattern from, so we are not going to pretend otherwise — with numbers this low one owner moves the percentage by a lot. What has been filed is grouped under steering (1), electrics and electronics (1), the brakes (1). Treat those as things to look at, not as the vehicle's known weaknesses. A thin file usually means few of these were sold or few owners filed. It is not evidence the vehicle is trouble-free, and the issues below are our own research rather than a reading of this record.
Counts come from the NHTSA complaint and recall database — free, public, and worth checking yourself.
Known Issues for the 2019 Cadillac ATS
Ranked by wallet impact. These are documented, recurring problems — not freak accidents. How we decide that.
The 2019 record is really one complaint filed four ways: an owner who bought the car at 12,800 miles and has had it throw error messages, lose power, accelerate by itself and become difficult to steer at random ever since, with the service history showing the fault predates them and nobody able to fix it. One report is not a pattern, and it is not rated high for that reason — but the symptoms overlap the electric power steering failures GM recalled on the 2017–2018 ATS and the electrical gremlins on those years, so it earns a real test drive: twenty minutes with the driver-assist and start/stop features cycling, watching for any warning, any surge, or the wheel going heavy.
Repair cost (estimate): $150–$400 for diagnosis and a battery or ground repair; $1,200–$2,500 if the steering gear is the fault

GM recalled the electric power steering gear on 2017–2018 ATS (and the Camaro, Corvette and CTS) in 2025 because the assist can fail without warning, leaving a wheel that barely turns at parking speed. The 2019 coupe is not in that campaign, and we cannot tell you whether that is because the part changed or because the population is small; ask a Cadillac dealer with the VIN whether any steering field action applies. At the car, engine running and stopped, turn lock to lock and listen and feel for a grind or a step in effort, and on the drive note whether any 'Service Power Steering' message appears.
Repair cost (estimate): $1,200–$2,500 for a steering gear

Nobody has filed a transmission complaint against a 2019 ATS, but the 2016, 2017 and 2018 records are full of the GM 8-speed's shudder on light throttle in the mid-40s, and the 2018 adds two rear differentials with failed bearings. The coupe uses the same transmission and rear axle. GM's first fix is a fluid exchange to its revised fluid, then a torque converter if that does not hold. Drive it at a steady 45 mph on a flat road with a light foot and feel the seat; then a quiet road with the radio off, listening for a growl or whine from behind that rises with road speed. A car still inside the six-year powertrain warranty turns this into a dealer visit rather than a bill — confirm the in-service date.
Repair cost (estimate): $300–$500 for the fluid exchange; $2,000–$3,500 for a torque converter; $2,500–$4,000 for a rear differential

On every ATS year from 2013 to 2018 owners report the CUE screen spider-cracking from the inside — while parked, or when the air conditioning comes on in summer — and then ignoring presses, taking the climate controls and radio with it. The 2019 coupe has the same unit. Look at the screen in daylight for the web pattern and press every corner. A dealer replaces the whole unit; an independent shop replaces the digitizer for a fraction of that.
Repair cost (estimate): $300–$1,500
