Kestrel Take
The 2016 is the mid-cycle update: a new 3.6L V6 and an 8-speed automatic behind it and the 2.0L turbo. The 8-speed is the thing to know about — a third of the 35 complaints are POWER TRAIN, and most describe the torque-converter shudder at 40–50 mph that GM's 8-speeds are known for, with one owner on a third rear differential. The big news is newer: a 2026 recall for a driver's airbag inflator that can rupture on deployment, with interim letters only just mailed. Then the CUE screen, and the defogger fire recall carried over from earlier years. 35 complaints is a modest record and a 3.6 with the shudder fixed on paper and the airbag recall done is a good car; the same car with a shudder the dealer 'could not find' is a torque converter you are buying.
What we checked
Reconciled against public records, 2026-09-25
NHTSA holds 35 owner complaints for the 2016 Cadillac ATS, and 3 recall campaigns.
A big number here usually means a lot of these were sold, not that it is a bad vehicle — popular models collect more complaints for the same rate of trouble. So the total on its own says little. What is worth reading is the shape of it. 31% of them are about one thing — the transmission and drivetrain. That much concentration is a genuine pattern rather than background noise, and it is the first thing to check on any example you look at.
3 recall campaigns cover this model year. Recalls are repaired free, for any owner, with no time limit on most safety campaigns — but only if someone books it in. Ask the seller to show it was done, or have any dealer check the VIN; it takes them a couple of minutes and costs nothing.
Counts come from the NHTSA complaint and recall database — free, public, and worth checking yourself.
Known Issues for the 2016 Cadillac ATS
Ranked by wallet impact. These are documented, recurring problems — not freak accidents. How we decide that.
Recall 26V329, announced in 2026, covers 2015–2016 ATS along with CTS, SRX, XTS and Escalade: the driver's front airbag inflator may rupture when it deploys, sending metal fragments at the driver. Dealers will replace the airbag module free. Interim letters went out June 19, 2026, which usually means the replacement parts were not all available yet — so 'open' on the VIN lookup may be the only answer for now. Ask the dealer whether the remedy is available for this VIN, and factor in that you may be driving it for a while before it can be done. Separately, five AIR BAGS complaints on this year include an airbag light tied to the passenger seat sensor and side airbags deploying from a curb strike.

Eleven POWER TRAIN complaints and they cluster tightly: a shudder or vibration on light throttle around 40–50 mph, a hard jolt as the car downshifts arriving at a light, revs hunting between 1,000 and 3,000. One dealer named the torque converter directly. This is the well-documented GM 8-speed behaviour, and the first-line fix is a transmission fluid exchange to GM's revised fluid; if that does not hold, the converter. One owner is on their third rear differential in two years and was quoted $4,700 for the next. Drive it on a flat road at a steady 45 mph with light throttle and feel the seat; then listen for a rear whine with the radio off.
Repair cost (estimate): $300–$500 for the fluid exchange; $2,000–$3,500 for a torque converter; $3,000–$4,700 for a differential — about 34% of what this car is typically worth

Seven ELECTRICAL complaints, and the screen is most of them: a spider-web crack spreading under the glass while the car sat in the driveway, then a screen you cannot read or press, taking the fan speed, Bluetooth and navigation with it. A dealer replaces the whole unit; independents replace the digitizer for a fraction. One owner also mentions the fuel pump clicking off every few seconds when filling — an evap vent issue worth a look if you notice it. Press every corner of the screen at the car and look at it in daylight for the crack pattern.
Repair cost (estimate): $300–$1,500

Recall 15V558 covers 2013–2016 ATS sedans built through September 2, 2015: the coil antenna module powering the rear defogger can overheat under continuous operation, with a fire risk. The fix is a free climate-control software update removing the automatic defogger function. One 2026 complaint on this year cites the campaign by number and describes the car 'overheating off and on' — check the VIN rather than take a seller's word. Recall 15V463 (early-2015 builds) replaces a sunroof switch trim plate so the roof cannot be closed by accident. Both free.

Four STEERING complaints including one crash. The 2017–2018 ATS got a recall for the electric power-steering gear failing; the 2016 did not, but the same symptom shows up here — a steering warning and a wheel that goes heavy. With the engine running and the car stopped, turn lock to lock and listen for a grind or a step change in effort. If the history shows a steering gear replaced, that is money already spent on your behalf.
Repair cost (estimate): $1,200–$2,500 for a steering gear
