A handsome first-year LF Sonata with 1,143 complaints, 644 of them the engine, and 48 reports of fire. The 2.4L and 2.0T are Theta II engines whose rod bearings fail and whose failures Hyundai answered with a knock-sensor software campaign and a lifetime warranty on failed engines under a class action — for original and subsequent owners, if the campaign was done. That last clause is the whole purchase. Get the VIN's campaign history from a Hyundai dealer before you drive it.

644 complaints, 56% of everything filed, 38 involving fire. Owners describe a knock that grows, then the engine stopping on the highway, sometimes in flames. Hyundai's 2011–2014 Sonata engine recall did not include the 2015; instead the 2015 got Product Improvement Campaign 953, the knock-sensor detection software that puts the car in limp mode before the bearing lets go, and a lifetime warranty on Theta II failures for owners who had it installed, under the class-action settlement. A car without the campaign, or with an engine already knocking, is a $6,000 bill. Newer complaints describe rough running after a 2026 emissions update (campaign 9C2); Hyundai paused it.

167 complaints, 16 with fire. Most trace back to the engine above: the knock-sensor software cutting power, or a bearing failure taking the electrical system with it. The Sonata Hybrid adds 'Hybrid System Warning, Safely Stop' shutdowns of its own. Sixteen fires under an electrical heading is a number to respect — inspect the engine bay for melted insulation and old fire-extinguisher residue.
