2015 Honda Pilot — Should You Buy One?
Typical asking price: $13,000–$19,000. There is 1 high-severity known issue you need to know before handing over a check.
Kestrel Take
The last year of the boxy Pilot, and a genuinely durable three-row. The J35 V6 is excellent with one caveat: the cylinder deactivation system causes oil burning and misfires on some cars, and the fix is a VCM disabler that costs less than a tank of gas.
Known Issues for the 2015 Honda Pilot
Ranked by wallet impact. These are documented, recurring problems — not freak accidents.
Cylinder deactivation fouls the rear-bank plugs and lets oil past the rings. Symptoms: misfire codes on cylinders 1-3, oil consumption, and shaking motor mounts. A VCM disabler device prevents it.
Repair cost range: $150 for a disabler, $2,500-$4,000 for a ring job
The hydraulic front mount collapses under VCM vibration, causing a shudder at idle in gear.
Repair cost range: $400-$800
This is a belt engine. At 105,000 miles the belt, water pump, and tensioner must be done. Skipping it destroys the engine.
Repair cost range: $900-$1,400
Noise on cold mornings from a pump or a fluid that needs replacing.
Repair cost range: $200-$700
