Kestrel Take
A young car with a thin record: 53 complaints is too few to rate reliability, so treat this page as a checklist, not a score. What the record does hold is specific. One recall — an EGR valve that can short and cut drive power — and three clusters that all touch safety while driving: a horn that quietly stops working, an instrument cluster that blanks out and takes the power steering assist with it, and a forward-collision system that brakes for nothing. None of these are wallet-breakers on a car still under Hyundai's bumper-to-bumper warranty; the job is to confirm the recall is closed, press the horn, and drive it on the highway with cruise on. Ask whether you are the second owner — Hyundai's 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty shrinks to 5/60 when the car changes hands, which matters on any IVT-equipped compact.
What we checked
Reconciled against public records, 2026-09-25
NHTSA holds 53 owner complaints for the 2024 Hyundai Elantra, and 1 recall campaign.
A big number here usually means a lot of these were sold, not that it is a bad vehicle — popular models collect more complaints for the same rate of trouble. So the total on its own says little. What is worth reading is the shape of it. The largest single group is electrics and electronics at 28%. That is notable without being overwhelming — worth checking, not worth panicking about.
One recall campaign covers this model year. Recalls are repaired free, for any owner, with no time limit on most safety campaigns — but only if someone books it in. Ask the seller to show it was done, or have any dealer check the VIN; it takes them a couple of minutes and costs nothing.
Counts come from the NHTSA complaint and recall database — free, public, and worth checking yourself.
Known Issues for the 2024 Hyundai Elantra
Ranked by wallet impact. These are documented, recurring problems — not freak accidents. How we decide that.
Recall 24V308 covers 2024 Elantras (with the Venue and Kona): an electrical short in the exhaust gas recirculation valve assembly can drop the engine into a no-power state while you are driving. Owners describe the check engine light, code P0401, and a car that will not pull onto the freeway until it is shut off and restarted. The fix is a new EGR valve assembly at no charge. Run the VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup before you drive it; if it shows open, the seller books the appointment, not you.
Repair cost: $0 with the recall — verify it was performed

Eight complaints, one crash: the Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist slams the brakes with an empty road ahead, sometimes with cruise control engaged, and one owner describes the car braking and steering itself into the next lane at 55 mph. Dealers have blamed direct sunlight. A related fault is a 'Forward radar blocked' message that comes and goes with nothing on the grille. Drive it on an open highway with smart cruise on; any unprompted brake application is a reason to walk, because the dealer may not be able to reproduce it either.
Repair cost: Not yet priced — a safety matter first, a repair bill second

The largest cluster on this car, 15 of 53 complaints, and it is two faults. The common one is the horn: it stops working, a fuse is found blown, and it fails again within months — 'horn' is the single most repeated word in the record. The rarer and more serious one is the instrument cluster: speedometer and tachometer drop out at speed, every warning light comes on, and the electric power steering falls to about half assist. A few backup cameras show a green 'No signal' screen. Press the horn before the test drive, and watch the gauges for any flicker on a rough road.
Repair cost (estimate): $100–$900

A handful of owners describe the car continuing to accelerate for a second or two after their foot comes off the gas, which they read as a drive-by-wire lag. It is uncomfortable in stop-and-go traffic and can make you brake harder than you meant to. It usually traces to the IVT's shift logic rather than a broken part, and a dealer software update is the typical answer. Notice it on the test drive and mention it at the dealer while the car is under warranty.
Repair cost (estimate): $0–$200
Source: NHTSA complaints filed under throttle and cruise control (6).
