Kestrel Take

Six complaints and no recall campaigns on file for this model year. That is a genuinely empty page, and an empty page is not a clean bill of health — it means almost nobody has filed, which is what you would expect from a low-volume car that has spent most of its life inside the factory warranty. So read this one as a buyer, not as a statistician. The three engine filings do not agree on a cause: one stall at 70 mph that would not restart, one incident after parking, and one owner describing the automatic stop-start cutting the engine before the car has fully stopped and letting it roll backwards on a hill. The rest of what we say below about coolant and the dual-clutch gearbox comes from this engine family's general reputation and is labelled as such, because the public record here does not support it either way. Get a pre-purchase inspection from an Audi or VW specialist and buy on the car's condition, not on the size of this file.

What we checked

Checked against public records, 2026-09-25

NHTSA holds 6 owner complaints for the 2022 Audi A4, and 3 recall campaigns.

That is too small a record to read a pattern from, so we are not going to pretend otherwise — with numbers this low one owner moves the percentage by a lot. What has been filed is grouped under the engine (3), airbags (1), the transmission and drivetrain (1). Treat those as things to look at, not as the vehicle's known weaknesses. A thin file usually means few of these were sold or few owners filed. It is not evidence the vehicle is trouble-free, and the issues below are our own research rather than a reading of this record.

3 recall campaigns cover this model year. Recalls are repaired free, for any owner, with no time limit on most safety campaigns — but only if someone books it in. Ask the seller to show it was done, or have any dealer check the VIN; it takes them a couple of minutes and costs nothing.

Counts come from the NHTSA complaint and recall database — free, public, and worth checking yourself.

Known Issues for the 2022 Audi A4

Ranked by wallet impact. These are documented, recurring problems — not freak accidents. How we decide that.

Stop-start cutting the engine before the car has stopped, and one stall at highway speedMedium

Half the complaints on this year are the engine, and they do not tell one story. One owner describes the automatic stop-start shutting the engine down while the car is still creeping, so on an incline the car loses forward drive and rolls backwards — he says it feels like the transmission slipping. A second owner's car stalled at 70 mph in traffic with no warning light and would not restart, and was towed to the dealer that sold it. A third filed an incident after the car had been parked and switched off, logged under both the engine and power train headings. Three filings is not a pattern, but they are all about the car doing something you did not ask it to. On the drive, use stop-start in real traffic and on a hill, and see whether it re-fires instantly every time.

Repair cost (estimate): $0–$400 for a stop-start software update at a dealer; $600–$1,800 for stall diagnosis and a sensor or fuel delivery repair

Source: NHTSA complaints filed under the engine (3), the transmission and drivetrain (1).

Passenger airbag warning light with someone sitting in the seatMedium

One owner reports the airbag warning light coming on with a chime at start-up while the front passenger seat was occupied, and the car going to the dealer for diagnosis. On this class of car that symptom usually points at the occupant detection mat in the passenger seat cushion or its wiring under the seat, and it matters because the system decides whether that airbag arms at all. It is one filing, so treat it as a thing to check rather than a known fault: sit a passenger in the seat, start the car, and confirm the passenger airbag status light reads as on and the warning lamp goes out.

Repair cost (estimate): $400–$1,400 for an occupant detection sensor mat and calibration

Source: NHTSA complaints filed under airbags (1).

Coolant leaks from the plastic thermostat housing and water pump moduleMedium

Nothing in this year's NHTSA record mentions cooling, so this is us telling you what this engine family is known for rather than what owners filed — weigh it accordingly. The 2.0 turbo four used across Audi and Volkswagen carries a combined plastic water pump and thermostat housing that becomes a common leak point with age and heat cycling, usually appearing as a sweet smell, a slowly dropping coolant reservoir, or crusty pink residue at the joints. It is not a catastrophe if caught early and it is a real bill if it is not. Look at the reservoir level, then look underneath the front of the engine with a torch for staining.

Repair cost (estimate): $700–$1,400 for the water pump and thermostat housing assembly

Source: not yet checked against public records.

Low-speed hesitation or shudder from the seven-speed dual-clutch gearboxMedium

Again not in this year's complaint record — this is the platform's reputation, offered as something to test rather than something documented on a 2022. Audi's S tronic dual-clutch transmission can hesitate, judder or take up roughly at crawling speeds, particularly pulling away on a gradient or reversing up a driveway, and the fix ranges from a fluid and filter service to mechatronic work. Drive the car in a parking lot at walking pace, reverse up a slope, and do several pull-aways from rest before you decide it is smooth. Ask whether the transmission fluid has ever been changed and when.

Repair cost (estimate): $400–$700 for a dual-clutch fluid and filter service; $2,000–$4,000 for mechatronic repair

Source: not yet checked against public records.

Walk-Away Red Flags

  • ✗Stop-start that re-fires slowly, or lets the car roll back on an incline
  • ✗Any hesitation, shudder or clunk pulling away from rest or reversing uphill
  • ✗An airbag or restraint warning lamp that stays lit with a passenger aboard
  • ✗A sweet smell after a drive, or pink crust around the front of the engine
  • ✗A check engine light the seller says has been on for a while

Good Signs

  • ✓A cold start that catches immediately and settles to an even idle
  • ✓Coolant at the correct mark with dry, clean joints around the pump and housing
  • ✓Transmission fluid and filter changed with a dated invoice
  • ✓Stop-start restarting the engine crisply ten times in a row in traffic
  • ✓A service history from an Audi dealer or VW-group specialist with mileage-stamped entries
