Kestrel Take
The second-to-last Passat: the 2020 restyle, the 174-hp 2.0T, the six-speed automatic, and a trim list pared down as VW wound the car out of the US. NHTSA holds zero complaints for the 2021 Passat under this model name, and we want to be plain about what that means: nothing. It is a low-volume final-years car that has spent most of its life under warranty, not a car with a clean record. What the record does hold is one recall that matters — front wheel bearing bolts that may not have been tightened, which is a loss-of-control fault — and everything we know from the 2015–2020 pages of this same car still applies: the clock spring, the plastic water pump. Run the VIN, press the horn, check the coolant, and buy on the dealer paperwork.
What we checked
Checked against public records, 2026-09-25
NHTSA holds no owner complaints for the 2021 Volkswagen Passat, and 1 recall campaign.
An empty record is weak evidence in both directions. It can mean few were sold, or that owners took problems to a dealer rather than to a federal database. It is not evidence the vehicle is trouble-free, and we will not present it as if it were.
One recall campaign covers this model year. Recalls are repaired free, for any owner, with no time limit on most safety campaigns — but only if someone books it in. Ask the seller to show it was done, or have any dealer check the VIN; it takes them a couple of minutes and costs nothing.
Counts come from the NHTSA complaint and recall database — free, public, and worth checking yourself.
Known Issues for the 2021 Volkswagen Passat
Ranked by wallet impact. These are documented, recurring problems — not freak accidents. How we decide that.
Recall 21V812 covers 2021 Passats (with the Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport) whose front wheel bearing housing bolts may have been under-torqued. Loose bolts can let the hub work free, and VW's own consequence statement is loss of control. The remedy is a free inspection and, where needed, new bolts, and it is the one line item on this car's public record. Check it on the NHTSA VIN lookup before anything else. At the car: jack a front corner if you can and rock the wheel top and bottom — any play, or a clunk over bumps from the front, is a reason to stop.

Nobody has filed a complaint on the 2021 yet, but the steering-column clock spring that kills the horn, the wheel buttons and the driver airbag together has turned up on every year of this car from 2012 through 2020, and the 2021 uses the same column. It announces itself with a click or crunch from the column on turning, then the airbag light. Turn the wheel lock to lock with the engine off and listen; press the horn and each wheel button on the drive. Ask a VW dealer with the VIN whether any clock-spring coverage remains — we cannot confirm the terms of VW's programme, so let them tell you.
Repair cost (estimate): $350–$900

The EA888 2.0T's composite water pump and thermostat housing is the known out-of-warranty bill on this engine, usually between 60,000 and 100,000 miles — a slowly dropping coolant level, pink crystallised residue on the front of the block under the intake manifold, and an overheat if ignored. A 2021 is likely still short of that mileage, which is exactly why a buyer should check now: expansion tank level on a cold engine, a flashlight under the intake, and a look at the dealer service history for a pump already replaced under warranty.
Repair cost (estimate): $600–$1,500
