Kestrel Take

Only 31 complaints, which is a small sample and not a clean sheet — but three recalls that matter more than the complaint count: a fuel pump that can crack and leak (fire risk), a ten-speed automatic that can lock the rear wheels while driving, and the airbag emblem. Half the powertrain cluster is owners who got the ten-speed recall letter and could not get the fix because the part was unavailable, so on a ten-speed car the first question is whether that software is actually installed today. The rest is thin and scattered — a coolant sensor, a reduced-power fault, the shift-to-park message. Buy on the three VIN lookups; a manual car, or an eight-speed four-cylinder or V6 with a clean drive, is the lower-risk choice at this money.

What we checked

Reconciled against public records, 2026-09-25

NHTSA holds 31 owner complaints for the 2020 Chevrolet Camaro, and 3 recall campaigns.

A big number here usually means a lot of these were sold, not that it is a bad vehicle — popular models collect more complaints for the same rate of trouble. So the total on its own says little. What is worth reading is the shape of it. 32% of them are about one thing — the transmission and drivetrain. That much concentration is a genuine pattern rather than background noise, and it is the first thing to check on any example you look at.

3 recall campaigns cover this model year. Recalls are repaired free, for any owner, with no time limit on most safety campaigns — but only if someone books it in. Ask the seller to show it was done, or have any dealer check the VIN; it takes them a couple of minutes and costs nothing.

Counts come from the NHTSA complaint and recall database — free, public, and worth checking yourself.

Known Issues for the 2020 Chevrolet Camaro

Ranked by wallet impact. These are documented, recurring problems — not freak accidents. How we decide that.

Ten-speed automatic can lock the wheels while driving (recall 25V148) — and the fix was slow to arriveHigh — wallet impact

Recall 25V148 covers 2020–2022 Camaros with the ten-speed automatic: the transmission can be damaged internally and lock the driven wheels while moving, which is a loss of control at any speed. The remedy is monitoring software for the transmission control module, free. Half of the ten powertrain complaints are owners who received the letter in 2025 and were told the part was not available; one crash report describes the car twisting and the wheels locking before it hit a curb. Others report a whine and metallic noise with a check-engine light at 65 mph, and a car that would not respond to the shifter until the control module was replaced. Confirm the recall is closed on the VIN lookup, not just mailed, and listen for a whine under acceleration.

Repair cost: $0 with the recall — verify it was performed; $1,500–$3,500 for a control module or converter outside it; $5,000–$8,000 for a transmission — about 25% of what this car is typically worth

Fuel pump built without a pressure regulator — can crack and leak fuel (recall)High — wallet impact

Recall 19V837 covers 2020 Camaros alongside GM's full-size trucks and SUVs: the fuel pump may be missing its pressure regulator, letting the fuel system over-pressurise until the pump cracks and leaks, with a fire risk near any ignition source. Dealers replace the fuel pump free of charge. It began in December 2019, so most cars have had it, but it is a thirty-second VIN check and the consequence is the kind you do not gamble on. A fuel smell around the rear of the car or after a hard drive is the field sign.

Repair cost: $0 with the recall — verify it was performed

Shift-to-Park message, reduced-power mode (P2138), trunk that will not open, SRS warningMedium

Six electrical complaints with no single part. The 'shift to park' message with the car already in Park is a GM-wide shifter-switch fault that can also drain the battery because the modules never shut down. An owner scanning P2138 with 'engine power reduced' on the highway points at the accelerator pedal position sensor or its wiring. A convertible whose trunk and top refused to open with a constant 'trunk not secured' alarm, and a passenger-seat SRS connector that a dealer charged $100 to fix, round it out. Shift into Park and switch off three times, watch that the interior lights go out, and open the trunk from the fob, the button and the key.

Repair cost (estimate): $100–$700 for a shifter switch, pedal sensor, trunk latch or seat connector

Coolant temperature sensor stuck cold, a V6 oil leak, and two stallsMedium

Five engine complaints. One is the same fault as the 2019: the gauge reading cold while the engine actually overheats at 65 mph, with a noise after shutdown — a coolant temperature sensor or thermostat that is cheap but can cost an engine if ignored. A 3.6L V6 owner reports an oil leak since 60,000 miles and believes other 2020 V6s were recalled for it; there is no such recall in this car's record, so treat it as a leak to look for, not a free fix. Two owners describe the car stalling or refusing to pull up a hill with the check-engine light on. Look at the gauge, look under the car after the drive, and scan for stored codes.

Repair cost (estimate): $150–$450 for a coolant sensor or thermostat; $300–$1,200 for a V6 oil leak depending on the seal

Steering-wheel emblem can break off during airbag deployment (recall)Medium

Recall 21V211 covers 2017–2021 Camaros: the plastic emblem on the driver airbag cover can separate during deployment and strike the driver. The remedy is a replacement driver airbag module, free of charge. A quick VIN lookup; if it is open, the seller has ignored dealer mail since 2021 and the other two recalls are probably open too.

Repair cost: $0 with the recall — verify it was performed
