Kestrel Take

The last Fiesta sold in America, and the record on it has changed shape: 60 of its 100 complaints were filed in 2025 and 2026, almost all about a rear-view camera that goes blank or distorted and two recalls whose parts owners could not get. Under that sits the same PowerShift automatic with 21 complaints and a lunge-into-the-car-ahead crash, and a brake caliper recall for seals that swell and drag until a front wheel seizes; two owners describe a caliper locked onto the wheel and a brake system that melted. Three recalls, and the two camera ones were still being phased in as of the latest filings. A 2019 with all three closed, a manual gearbox, and front brakes that run cool after a drive is a fair buy at the money; a 2019 with the calipers unaddressed is not a car we would get into.

What we checked

Reconciled against public records, 2026-09-25

NHTSA holds 100 owner complaints for the 2019 Ford Fiesta, and 3 recall campaigns.

A big number here usually means a lot of these were sold, not that it is a bad vehicle — popular models collect more complaints for the same rate of trouble. So the total on its own says little. What is worth reading is the shape of it. 30% of them are about one thing — back over prevention. That much concentration is a genuine pattern rather than background noise, and it is the first thing to check on any example you look at.

3 recall campaigns cover this model year. Recalls are repaired free, for any owner, with no time limit on most safety campaigns — but only if someone books it in. Ask the seller to show it was done, or have any dealer check the VIN; it takes them a couple of minutes and costs nothing.

Counts come from the NHTSA complaint and recall database — free, public, and worth checking yourself.

Known Issues for the 2019 Ford Fiesta

Ranked by wallet impact. These are documented, recurring problems — not freak accidents. How we decide that.

Rear-view camera blank, flickering or distorted; two recalls, with owners waiting months for partsMedium

Thirty complaints, 30% of the record, and they read the same way: the camera image flickers, distorts, then goes black in reverse, and the owner has a recall letter but the dealer has no part. Recall 24V951 in late 2024 covered the 2019 Fiesta's camera; 25V695 in 2025 widened it across a dozen Fords and is a phased campaign with parts arriving in stages. Two crashes are logged in this cluster. On the test, put it in reverse three or four times and watch the screen; a flicker or a grey smear is the fault. Then check the VIN lookup for both campaigns, and ask the seller whether they have a repair date or just a letter.

Repair cost: $0 with the recall — verify it was performed

PowerShift automatic: 'Transmission Hot Wait 5 Minutes', a lunge from a standstill into the car ahead, stuck in ParkHigh — wallet impact

21 powertrain complaints, two crashes. One driver stopped at a light had the car lunge forward into the vehicle ahead with no warning light; another lost power at 55 mph with 'Transmission Hot Wait 5 Minutes' on the dash; a third's shifter kept locking in Park after the dealer replaced the mechanism. The DPS6 dual-clutch overheats its dry clutches in traffic and its control module drops out, and this last model year did not get a different gearbox. A 2019 should still be inside the 7-year/100,000-mile extended clutch coverage from Ford's settlement, and that is worth confirming on the VIN with a dealer before anything else. Creep it in traffic for twenty minutes and feel for judder and a delayed bite; a hot-transmission message on the drive ends the conversation.

Repair cost (estimate): $0 if inside Ford's extended coverage; $1,200–$2,200 for a clutch pack; $800–$1,500 for a control module

Front calipers drag and seize from swollen seals; brakes melt, ABS modules fail (recall)High — wallet impact

Recall 19V629 covers the 2019 Fiesta: the front calipers were assembled with the wrong fluid, the rubber seals swell, and the brakes drag until they overheat. Owners describe exactly that, and worse: a car that rocks at speed and will not pull away from a stop, a caliper found locked onto the wheel, a front brake system that 'melted' after a pothole and a wheel that seized. Two others lost the ABS module around 80,000 miles and one was told the recall did not apply to their car. The remedy is new front calipers, hoses and a fluid flush, free. After a ten-minute drive, hold the back of your hand near each front wheel; one much hotter than the other is a dragging caliper. Then confirm the campaign on the VIN.

Repair cost: $0 with the recall — verify it was performed; $400–$900 per side for calipers and rotor outside it; $1,000–$1,800 for an ABS module

Walk-Away Red Flags

  • ✗Rear camera that flickers, smears or goes black when you select reverse
  • ✗Judder pulling away, a delayed bite, or any hot-transmission message on the automatic
  • ✗One front wheel noticeably hotter than the other after a short drive, or a burnt smell at a stop
  • ✗Car that feels held back from a stop and then surges
  • ✗Seller has recall letters but cannot show a repair date for any of them

Good Signs

  • ✓All three recalls listed as remedied on the NHTSA VIN lookup, with the caliper job on a dealer invoice
  • ✓Rear camera coming up sharp and steady on four separate shifts into reverse
  • ✓Ford dealer confirms in writing that the PowerShift extended coverage is still active on this VIN
  • ✓Both front wheels equally warm to the hand after a ten-minute drive, and the car rolling freely in neutral
  • ✓Manual gearbox with a crisp pedal and smooth engagement
