The accelerator pedal mechanism can wear so the pedal returns slowly or partially sticks, causing unwanted continued acceleration -- most reported in cold, humid conditions and after wear sets in. Toyota recalled 2.3 million vehicles including this exact model/year in January 2010 and later added a brake-override software update as backup.
