The all-weather hot hatch — the Golf R's turbo 2.0L, standard AWD, and understated looks make it a supremely capable do-everything car that's fast, practical, and usable year-round. It's a German turbo, so budget for the water pump, carbon, and (on DSG cars) transmission service, plus watch for tuning. A stock or quality-tuned, documented Golf R is one of the best all-round performance cars; verify service, AWD (Haldex) health, and any tune.
