The last year of the W213 E-Class, and the twenty-four complaints on file are dominated by one alarming pattern: seven owners describe the engine simply stopping while the car is in gear and moving — at a left turn, at a green light, on a residential street after a 48-volt malfunction and a coolant-overheat warning, and in one case a seizure. Most of those cars had under 6,000 miles. The other two clusters are cheaper: factory run-flat tires that blow out on potholes, and dashboards that go dark. Twenty-four filings is a small record and we are not going to dress it up as a reliability score, but a car that cuts out in traffic is the one thing you cannot inspect your way around. Insist on warranty coverage or a documented fix.

A big number here usually means a lot of these were sold, not that it is a bad vehicle — popular models collect more complaints for the same rate of trouble. So the total on its own says little. What is worth reading is the shape of it. The largest single group is the engine at 29%. That is notable without being overwhelming — worth checking, not worth panicking about.

Seven owners describe the same frightening event: the car is in drive, moving or about to move, and the engine stops with a bare 'malfunction' message and often no fault code the dealer can read. One was mid-left-turn, one was at a green light in cross traffic, one coasted into a car park. A fourth got a malfunction warning, then a 48-volt warning, then a coolant-overheat warning, then limp mode, then nothing — on a residential street rather than a freeway, by luck. Most of these cars had under 6,000 miles. Ask the seller directly whether the car has ever stopped on its own, and get the dealer to print every stored and historic fault from the mild-hybrid system.

Repair cost (estimate): $1,200–$3,500 for the 48-volt battery or the belt-driven starter-generator; several thousand more if a dealer condemns the mild-hybrid control unit

Factory 19-inch run-flat tires blowing out on ordinary potholesMedium

Five filings name the same tire — the Continental ProContact GX SSR in 245/40 R19 fitted to the E450 — and describe instant, complete deflation on impact with small potholes rather than a slow leak. Be honest about the count: three of those five are the same complaint text filed three times by one owner who had three blowouts in eighteen months, so this is really three owners, not five. A stiff run-flat sidewall on a 19-inch wheel is short on give, and this is a tire budget question more than a defect. Check the date codes and look at each sidewall and rim edge for damage.

Instrument cluster and MBUX screens going dark while drivingMedium

Four electrical filings, and the serious ones describe repeated total dashboard failure — speedometer gone, warning lamps gone — plus a lane-keeping warning followed by a red 'emergency braking to begin' message on a car with cruise control set. One of the four should be discounted: it follows an aftermarket ignition-interlock device being wired into the car, which is the installer's problem and not the E-Class's. Sit in the car through two full cold starts and watch every screen come up; a cluster that boots slowly or flickers once is telling you something.
