Kestrel Take

Ten complaints is a small pile, but unlike the 2021 it has a shape, and the shape is the driver-assistance and power-delivery electronics rather than the hydrogen hardware: six of the ten are the collision-avoidance system, including two owners who rear-ended the car in front, and three describe the car quietly losing motive power at speed. The stability control recall from 2021 carries over. Everything else that governs a used Mirai still applies — dealer-only fuel-cell service, a hydrogen network that keeps shrinking, and a fuel credit you must verify with Toyota rather than the seller. This is a deeply comfortable, deeply cheap luxury car for someone who lives near a working station and goes in with their eyes open about who can fix it.

What we checked

Checked against public records, 2026-09-25

NHTSA holds 10 owner complaints for the 2022 Toyota Mirai, and 1 recall campaign.

That is too small a record to read a pattern from, so we are not going to pretend otherwise — with numbers this low one owner moves the percentage by a lot. What has been filed is grouped under the driver-assist and automatic braking systems (6), electrics and electronics (3), the engine (2). Treat those as things to look at, not as the vehicle's known weaknesses. A thin file usually means few of these were sold or few owners filed. It is not evidence the vehicle is trouble-free, and the issues below are our own research rather than a reading of this record.

One recall campaign covers this model year. Recalls are repaired free, for any owner, with no time limit on most safety campaigns — but only if someone books it in. Ask the seller to show it was done, or have any dealer check the VIN; it takes them a couple of minutes and costs nothing.

Counts come from the NHTSA complaint and recall database — free, public, and worth checking yourself.

Known Issues for the 2022 Toyota Mirai

Ranked by wallet impact. These are documented, recurring problems — not freak accidents. How we decide that.

Collision-avoidance system misbehaving — no intervention in two crashes, phantom braking faults in othersHigh — wallet impact

Six of this year's ten complaints sit here. Two owners rear-ended the vehicle in front and report that automatic emergency braking never engaged and no warning appeared; another describes the Teammate Advanced Drive package behaving unpredictably; another had the car hesitate under acceleration with a "Parking Support Brake" message and end up on a tow truck. Be clear with yourself that emergency braking is designed to reduce an impact, not to drive the car — but a system throwing PSKB faults is a real defect. Have the car scanned for stored codes in the driver-assistance modules and check every camera and radar cover for accident repair paint or misalignment.

Repair cost: Not yet priced — a safety matter first, a repair bill second

Losing motive power at speed, with the hydrogen system shutting downHigh — wallet impact

Three owners describe the car giving up while moving: one decelerating through 60 mph with the accelerator pressed and warning lights arriving, another reporting the hydrogen system shutting off abruptly in traffic with steering and braking assistance going with it, a third with a display that switches itself off and a main battery that would not take a jump. On a fuel-cell car these threads are connected — the traction battery, the fuel cell and the 12-volt all have to agree before the car will move. Ask for a Toyota dealer health check on the fuel-cell system and the battery, in writing, rather than a used-car dealer's reassurance.

Repair cost (estimate): $200–$400 for the 12-volt battery; from $200 for a dealer fuel-cell diagnosis, and stack repairs reach five figures

Hesitation under acceleration, then a limp homeMedium

Two filings, both from owners who pressed the accelerator and got hesitation instead of drive — one with the parking-brake support message showing, one that carried on decelerating from highway speed. With only two reports this is a thing to test rather than a proven fault. On the drive, find a safe on-ramp and use full acceleration from 30 to 65 mph; a healthy Mirai pulls smoothly and silently with no pause and no warning chime, and any stumble deserves a dealer scan before you buy.

Repair cost (estimate): $200–$600 for diagnosis and sensor work, considerably more if the fuel-cell system is implicated

Stability control may not switch itself on at startup (recall)High — wallet impact

Recall 22V239000 applies to 2021-2022 Mirai and a long list of Toyota and Lexus hybrids: a skid control ECU software fault can leave vehicle stability control deactivated, so the car drives without its electronic safety net. The dealer fix is a free software update. On a rear-wheel-drive car this is worth closing before you drive it home in the rain. Run the VIN through NHTSA's free recall lookup and confirm the VSC light extinguishes after startup.

Repair cost: $0 with the recall — verify it was performed

Walk-Away Red Flags

  • ✗Any warning message mentioning Parking Support Brake or PSKB
  • ✗Hesitation or a fading pull when you accelerate hard onto a highway
  • ✗Fresh paint or a replaced grille panel around the front radar sensor
  • ✗VSC or stability control light that stays lit after startup

Good Signs

  • ✓Recall 22V239000 confirmed closed on the VIN
  • ✓A clean Toyota dealer scan of the driver-assistance modules, on paper
  • ✓Full-power acceleration from 30 to 65 mph that is smooth and silent
  • ✓Written confirmation from Toyota of remaining hydrogen credit and fuel-cell coverage
  • ✓A hydrogen station on your daily route, confirmed working on the day
