Kestrel Take
Four complaints for the whole model year and no recall campaigns. A record that small says almost nothing about how the car holds up — it says four people bothered to file, and we will not dress that up as a reliability rating. What those four wrote does point somewhere, though: two of them are the same event, a panoramic sunroof shattering by itself at highway speed, filed under two different headings. The third is a driver who says the brakes did not slow the car in traffic and ended up in a crash. So the inspection list writes itself. Look up at the glass, then spend real time on the brakes before you buy, and price a used CLA knowing that Mercedes parts do not get cheaper as the car gets older.
What we checked
Checked against public records, 2026-09-25
NHTSA holds 4 owner complaints for the 2022 Mercedes-Benz CLA, and no recall campaigns.
That is too small a record to read a pattern from, so we are not going to pretend otherwise — with numbers this low one owner moves the percentage by a lot. What has been filed is grouped under glass, wipers and mirrors (1), the body and structure (1), the brakes (1). Treat those as things to look at, not as the vehicle's known weaknesses. A thin file usually means few of these were sold or few owners filed. It is not evidence the vehicle is trouble-free, and the issues below are our own research rather than a reading of this record.
Counts come from the NHTSA complaint and recall database — free, public, and worth checking yourself.
Known Issues for the 2022 Mercedes-Benz CLA
Ranked by wallet impact. These are documented, recurring problems — not freak accidents. How we decide that.
Two of the four complaints on this year describe the same thing from different angles: a single loud bang on the highway and the panoramic glass roof breaking apart overhead, with nothing hitting it. NHTSA filed one under visibility and one under structure, so it looks like two problems in the cluster table and is really one. This is a known phenomenon on large bonded panoramic panels across several makes, not a Mercedes invention, but the bill lands on whoever owns the car: the glass is a big laminated panel and the labour to bond a new one in is not small. If the car in front of you has an aftermarket or insurance-replaced roof panel, ask for the invoice and check the headliner edges for glass chips left behind.
Repair cost (estimate): $1,600–$3,600 for the panel, seal and labour

A driver on the freeway at 60 mph braking for stopped traffic says the car simply did not slow, and hit the vehicle in front. That is a single complaint — one report is a story, not a pattern, and we are not going to call it a defect on this evidence. But it is the one thing in this tiny record that could hurt you, so treat it as your test-drive priority rather than a footnote. Find an empty road, get to 45 mph and brake hard once: the pedal should go firm and stay firm, the car should stop straight, and ABS chatter under your foot is the system working, not failing. A spongy pedal that sinks toward the floor means fluid or a master cylinder and is worth walking away from until it is fixed.
Repair cost (estimate): $250–$1,500 from a fluid flush and pads up to a master cylinder or ABS unit

Nobody filed this with NHTSA for the 2022, so take it as something to check rather than a documented fault on this year. These cars run two batteries — the main one and a small auxiliary battery that keeps the electronics alive — and when the little one weakens the symptoms look like software: MBUX rebooting, the twin screens going dark, warning messages arriving in batches, the car being slow to wake up. Sit in it with the engine off for a few minutes and work the screens, the voice assistant and the wireless phone connection before you start it. A car that throws a fistful of unrelated warnings on startup is usually telling you about electrical supply, not about a dozen broken systems.
Repair cost (estimate): $180–$900 for the auxiliary battery and coding, more if the main battery goes with it

Walk-Away Red Flags
- ✗Chips or cracks radiating from the edge of the panoramic glass
- ✗Headliner trim with glass fragments trapped in the seam, meaning the roof has already gone once
- ✗Brake pedal that sinks slowly toward the floor while you hold it at a stop
- ✗A batch of unrelated warning messages arriving at startup
- ✗Screens that reboot themselves while you are sitting in the car
Good Signs
- ✓Sunroof glass replaced by Mercedes with the repair order attached
- ✓A hard stop from 45 mph that pulls up straight with a firm pedal
- ✓Brake fluid changed within the last two years, with the invoice
- ✓Auxiliary battery replaced and coded by a dealer or a Mercedes specialist
- ✓Service history showing the A and B services done on time at a franchised dealer
