Kestrel Take
Five complaints in the entire public record and no recall campaigns. Five is not a reliability rating — it is near-silence, and near-silence means almost nobody filed, not that nothing happens. What did get filed is worth a buyer's full attention because of what it is rather than how often it appears: two separate owners had the car stall outright while driving, one stranded in a centre highway lane waiting an hour and a half for a tow, the other unable to restart at the roadside. That is the whole weight of this record, and there is no recall and no named cause behind it. The IS itself is the familiar rear-drive Lexus — the 2021 restyle of a long-running platform, the 3.5 V6 in the IS 350, the V8 in the IS 500 — and the parts underneath it are proven. Get a pre-purchase inspection with a scan for stored and pending codes, ask the seller directly whether the car has ever refused to start or cut out, and buy on that answer.
What we checked
Checked against public records, 2026-09-25
NHTSA holds 5 owner complaints for the 2022 Lexus IS, and 1 recall campaign.
That is too small a record to read a pattern from, so we are not going to pretend otherwise — with numbers this low one owner moves the percentage by a lot. What has been filed is grouped under the engine (2), the fuel system (2), the suspension (1). Treat those as things to look at, not as the vehicle's known weaknesses. A thin file usually means few of these were sold or few owners filed. It is not evidence the vehicle is trouble-free, and the issues below are our own research rather than a reading of this record.
One recall campaign covers this model year. Recalls are repaired free, for any owner, with no time limit on most safety campaigns — but only if someone books it in. Ask the seller to show it was done, or have any dealer check the VIN; it takes them a couple of minutes and costs nothing.
Counts come from the NHTSA complaint and recall database — free, public, and worth checking yourself.
Known Issues for the 2022 Lexus IS
Ranked by wallet impact. These are documented, recurring problems — not freak accidents. How we decide that.
Two of the five complaints on record are the same event on different cars. One owner's IS died in the middle of heavy highway traffic and came to rest in a centre lane; they sat in it with a passenger for about ninety minutes waiting for a truck, and it went to the dealer on a flatbed. The other lost the ability to accelerate, pulled over, shut it off, and then could not start it again, waiting four hours for a tow to Lexus. NHTSA has these filed under both the engine and the fuel system, which is the filing clerk's way of saying nobody has named the cause. With no recall and no pattern to point at, your defence is a scan tool: have an independent shop pull stored and pending codes and the freeze-frame data before you buy, and ask the seller in plain words whether this car has ever cut out or failed to start.
Repair cost: Not yet priced — a safety matter first, a repair bill second
Source: NHTSA complaints filed under the fuel system (2), the engine (2).
One owner describes a repeated click from the passenger side of the engine bay near the vacuum pump, present on cold starts and again under load, and mentions in the same breath that the brakes sometimes feel as though they are not gripping as hard. Those two go together: the pump supplies vacuum to the brake booster, and a pump on its way out gives you exactly that combination of noise and a firmer, less assisted pedal. It is a modest bill caught early and an unpleasant surprise caught late. Start the car from stone cold with the window down and listen at the passenger front wheel for a rapid ticking, then compare the pedal on the first stop of the day against the tenth.
Repair cost (estimate): $400–$900 for a brake vacuum pump at an independent shop
Source: NHTSA complaints filed under the engine (2), the brakes (1).
