NHTSA holds 2,136 owner complaints for the 2021 Tesla Model Y, and no recall campaigns.

A big number here usually means a lot of these were sold, not that it is a bad vehicle — popular models collect more complaints for the same rate of trouble. So the total on its own says little. What is worth reading is the shape of it. 54% of them are about one thing — the driver-assist and automatic braking systems. That much concentration is a genuine pattern rather than background noise, and it is the first thing to check on any example you look at.

Phantom braking — the car brakes hard for nothingHigh — wallet impact

On Autopilot or plain cruise the car suddenly slams the brakes on an open highway — for a shadow, an overpass, or an oncoming truck — hard enough to risk a rear-end hit. NHTSA opened an investigation into 2021–2022 Model 3 and Model Y over this after hundreds of complaints; the camera-only 'Tesla Vision' cars (radar removed from mid-2021 builds) were the worst reported. Software updates have reduced it but not eliminated it; there is nothing to repair, so drive it on cruise with traffic around before buying.
