Second year of the seventh-generation Legacy, and the public record is thin: 31 complaints, with no crash and no fire among them. That is not a reliability rating — it is 31 people. What those 31 people describe is three recalls (a CVT control-unit reprogram for a drive chain that can slip, a reverse-light switch, and a passenger airbag sensor that owners waited most of a year for parts on), windshields that crack without being hit, and a head unit that goes black. Buy one with all three recalls shown closed on the VIN lookup and a windshield you have inspected edge to edge; budget for the glass if it has a Subaru-original windshield and no replacement invoice.

Recall 22V485 covers 2020–2021 Legacy and Outback: a programming error in the transmission control unit could engage the clutch before the CVT's drive chain was fully clamped, so the chain can slip, wear, and eventually break — which means the car stops pulling, wherever you are. The remedy is a TCU reprogram plus a data check for past slip events; if the data shows slippage the transmission is replaced under the recall. Only two owners in this record filed on the transmission, so this is a recall to verify rather than a pattern owners are reporting. Look the VIN up on NHTSA and ask for the dealer printout showing both the reflash and the inspection result.

Passenger airbag occupant sensor can short and disable the front passenger airbag (recall)High — wallet impact

Recall 24V227 covers 2020–2022 Legacy and Outback: a capacitor in the seat's occupant-detection sensors can crack and short, which switches the front passenger airbag off. All six airbag complaints on this year are about this recall — mostly owners who received the notice in spring 2024 and were told for months that the replacement sensors were not available; final letters did not go out until February 2025. The fix is a new sensor set in the passenger seat cushion, free. If the passenger airbag OFF light stays on with an adult in the seat, this is why. Check the VIN and do not accept 'parts are on order' from a seller in 2026.

Windshield cracks on its own — from the defroster line or the edge, with no impactMedium

Six of 31 complaints, and every one describes the same thing: a crack appearing from the bottom edge or the ceramic defrost strip while the car sat or while the defroster was on, with nothing having hit the glass. Several owners had it happen two or three times. Subaru's windshield on this generation carries the EyeSight cameras, so it is an OEM-glass, camera-recalibration replacement, not a cheap aftermarket pane — and some dealers have covered it under warranty while others called it road damage. Run a finger along the bottom edge and look through the glass at a low angle; a repaired chip near the defroster line is a crack waiting to run.

Head unit goes black and takes the camera and safety alerts with it; batteries dying youngMedium

The 11.6-inch Starlink screen is the car's climate control, backup camera display and the place EyeSight warnings appear, so when it shuts off and restarts on its own — which owners report with and without CarPlay running — you lose more than the radio. One owner had the unit replaced under warranty and the fault returned. Two others report a battery dying flat at very low mileage with a slow crank beforehand; whether that is the earlier-generation parasitic-drain problem carried forward or just a weak battery, we cannot tell from this record. On the test drive, leave the screen on for the full 20 minutes and watch for a reboot; have the battery load-tested.

Water in the transmission inhibitor switch kills the reverse lights and the backup camera (recall)Medium

Recall 23V755 covers 2021–2023 Legacy: a weak weld on the park/neutral inhibitor switch can let water in, and a failed switch means the reverse lights do not come on and the camera image does not appear when you select Reverse. Dealers replace the switch free; letters went out in January 2024. Cheap to confirm — put it in Reverse in a garage and look for both the lights and the camera image. If either is missing, the recall is probably open.
