Kestrel Take

A 2021 Forte is the same 2.0L-and-IVT car as the 2020, and 67 complaints tell a similar story: a third of the record is the engine, with oil starvation and sudden loss of power the theme. What is different this year is two recalls that matter — a steering-column bolt that can let the column separate from the rack, and a passenger airbag occupant sensor — and the theft problem: key-start trims shipped without an engine immobilizer, and a good share of the complaints are stolen cars and insurers who will not quote. Buy a push-button-start trim or one with Kia's anti-theft software update documented, both recalls closed on the VIN lookup, and an oil-change history you can read. That is a fair, cheap-to-run compact. Without those, walk.

What we checked

Reconciled against public records, 2026-09-25

NHTSA holds 67 owner complaints for the 2021 Kia Forte, and 2 recall campaigns.

A big number here usually means a lot of these were sold, not that it is a bad vehicle — popular models collect more complaints for the same rate of trouble. So the total on its own says little. What is worth reading is the shape of it. 33% of them are about one thing — the engine. That much concentration is a genuine pattern rather than background noise, and it is the first thing to check on any example you look at.

2 recall campaigns cover this model year. Recalls are repaired free, for any owner, with no time limit on most safety campaigns — but only if someone books it in. Ask the seller to show it was done, or have any dealer check the VIN; it takes them a couple of minutes and costs nothing.

Counts come from the NHTSA complaint and recall database — free, public, and worth checking yourself.

Known Issues for the 2021 Kia Forte

Ranked by wallet impact. These are documented, recurring problems — not freak accidents. How we decide that.

Steering column bolt may be loose — column can detach from the rack (recall)High — wallet impact

Recall 22V304 covers 2021–2022 Fortes: the lower steering-column u-joint retention bolt may not have been tightened at the factory, and if it backs out the column can separate from the steering rack, which is a total loss of steering. The fix is a dealer tightening the bolt, free. The steering cluster also has two crashes and reports of the wheel locking or rubbing — the electric power-steering motor has a known noise issue Kia has addressed by TSB on some build plants. Run the VIN on NHTSA before anything else, then turn the wheel lock to lock at a standstill and listen for rubbing or clunks.

Repair cost: $0 with the recall — verify it was performed; $800–$1,800 for an EPS column if it is noisy

2.0L engine runs dry, loses power, or fails with misfires on every cylinderHigh — wallet impact

Twenty-two engine complaints, the largest cluster at 33%. Owners describe the car shutting off with the check engine light and a dealer finding no oil in it, sudden noise and bogging within weeks of an oil change, persistent vibration at stops, and one car with misfire codes on all four cylinders traced to a corroded battery terminal that was arcing. A share of this cluster is theft and immobilizer complaints filed under 'engine', not mechanical failures. Check the oil cold, ask how much it uses between changes, and get the seller's oil-change receipts; a Kia dealer can say what powertrain coverage transfers to you.

Repair cost (estimate): $5,000–$8,000 for an engine; $100–$300 for a battery terminal and cable — around 58% of what this car is typically worth

Key-start trims have no engine immobilizer — theft, insurance refusals, and the anti-theft software updateMedium

The 2021 Forte with a physical key (LX, LXS, FE) was built without an engine immobilizer, which is why it can be started with a screwdriver once the column is torn open. Owners report stolen cars at 8k miles and insurers declining coverage. Kia offered a free software upgrade and steering-wheel lock; the theft class action settled and covered these cars. Before you buy, get an insurance quote on the exact VIN, and ask the seller for proof the anti-theft software update was installed — a dealer can confirm it. Push-button-start trims have an immobilizer and are not affected. The rest of this cluster is a melted HVAC blower connector and an erratic downshift the dealer confirmed but could not fix.

Repair cost (estimate): $0–$500 for the update and a wheel lock; $150–$400 for the blower motor connector

Passenger airbag occupant sensor may not recognise a child seat (recall)Medium

Recall 21V164 covers 2021 Fortes whose occupant classification unit may fail to detect a child restraint in the front passenger seat, so the airbag could deploy with a child there. Dealers replace the OCS/ODS unit free. Separately, five of the six airbag complaints on this year are non-deployment reports after a crash, which an inspection cannot check. Confirm the recall is closed on the VIN and that the passenger airbag indicator on the dash switches between ON and OFF correctly with and without a passenger.

Repair cost: $0 with the recall — verify it was performed

IVT that slips, drags, or overheatsMedium

Seven powertrain complaints on this year — fewer than the 2020 but the same transmission. Owners describe dragging, a burning smell, and erratic shifting behaviour after highway driving. The IVT is a pushbelt CVT and a replacement is a four-figure job outside warranty, which is why we want a long test drive: cold start, a smooth pull to 60, and a steady tachometer at a 65 mph cruise. A Kia dealer can tell you whether the powertrain warranty is still in force for a second owner on this VIN.

Repair cost (estimate): $4,000–$6,500 for a replacement IVT — about 47% of what this car is typically worth

Walk-Away Red Flags

  • ✗Either recall (22V304 steering bolt, 21V164 airbag sensor) still open on the NHTSA VIN lookup
  • ✗Physical key start with no proof of the anti-theft software update
  • ✗A rubbing or clunking noise turning the wheel at a standstill
  • ✗Low oil on a cold dipstick, or a seller vague about oil use
  • ✗Broken or replaced rear passenger window glass — a theft attempt tell

Good Signs

  • ✓Both recalls shown closed on the NHTSA VIN lookup
  • ✓Push-button start trim, or the Kia anti-theft update confirmed by a dealer
  • ✓Insurance quote in hand on this VIN before you commit
  • ✓Oil-change receipts every 5k miles with the level checked between
  • ✓A smooth, quiet IVT on a 20-minute drive with a steady tachometer at cruise
