The first TNGA Corolla sedan, and the record is unusually concentrated for a Toyota: over a third of complaints are one part, the 2.0L engine's electric coolant bypass valve. It fails at 50,000–80,000 miles, throws 'Engine Maintenance Required', and Toyota's response has been uneven. It is a $700 part on an otherwise excellent car. Buy the car; budget the valve if it has not been done.

Toyota has a redesigned valve and the fault is the subject of a class action; some owners over 100,000 miles have been refused. Ask whether it has been replaced — it is the one question that matters on this car.

On the six-speed manual the concentric slave cylinder fails internally and the pedal stops returning — a transmission-out repair, and the shared reservoir means brake fluid can go with it. On the CVT a smaller number of reports of hesitation when pulling away. The manual is rare on the sedan; check which you have.

The factory battery is small for a car that never really sleeps, and owners replace it early; some fit an AGM. A few 'Communication Module Failure' messages from the telematics unit and a seat belt or SRS warning that comes and goes.

Three campaigns: 20V682 replaces a low-pressure fuel pump that can stall the engine; 19V877 fixes rear seat belt assemblies whose locking mode can fail; 23V865 replaces a passenger occupant classification sensor that can disable the airbag. All free, and the last two had long parts waits.
