2018 Toyota Yaris — Should You Buy One?

Four complaints. That is the whole public file on this year, and it is not a clean bill of health — it is four people who bothered to write. One thing worth knowing if you have read our 2017 page: the door-harness airbag recall that covers 2015–2017 Yaris stops at 2017, so this year does not carry it, and the only recall on the record is a floor-mat weight label on the Yaris iA sedan. The hatchback underneath is unchanged — the 1.5L, the four-speed automatic, the pre-collision camera — which means the inspection is the same one we would do on any of them: cold start, water pump, transmission fluid, and a hard stop to prove the ABS works. One owner reports the passenger airbag lamp and seat-belt chime going off with nobody in the seat, which is the seat's occupant sensor and worth a five-second look at the dash. A well-kept one is a sensible, cheap-to-run car; just do not read a short list as a guarantee.

Passenger airbag lamp and seat-belt chime with the seat empty — occupant sensor faultMedium

One owner describes the passenger airbag warning lighting up and the seat-belt chime sounding with no one in the front passenger seat, and the dealer unable to say why. That combination points at the occupant classification sensor in the seat cushion or its wiring under the seat, and it matters because the same system decides whether the passenger airbag fires at all. Outside warranty a seat sensor mat is a few hundred dollars from an independent shop and closer to four figures if the dealer replaces the whole cushion assembly. At the car: start it, watch the passenger airbag indicator, and sit a bag on the seat to see if the light and chime behave. The other airbag complaint on this year is a frontal crash with no deployment, which nothing on the lot can check.

1.5L water pump begins to weep as the miles climbMedium

The 1NZ-FE has few habits, but a weeping water pump is one of them once a car gets past roughly 80,000 miles. Look at the pump on the passenger side of the engine with a torch before the engine warms up: a dried pink crust, a chalky ring, or a trail down the block means the seal is going. Check the coolant reservoir sits at the line when cold. It is a modest job if you catch it and an overheated engine if you do not, so if there is no invoice for a pump, price one into the offer.

Four-speed automatic on original fluid — lazy engagement and a flare on the two-three shiftLow

The U340E four-speed is a plain, durable gearbox that many owners never service. The symptoms of old fluid are easy to feel: a beat before Drive takes on a cold morning, a soft flare between second and third under moderate throttle, and a thump into first as you stop. A drain-and-fill with Toyota WS is the cheapest transmission insurance there is. Ask for a receipt; if there is none, do it yourself in the first month and feel for one clean, positive upshift on a firm pull during the test drive.

✗Tires that skid rather than the pedal pulsing on a hard stop from 25 mph
✗Pink or chalky residue on the water pump, or a coolant reservoir below the cold line

✗Rattle from the timing chain area for the first second of a cold start
