Kestrel Take
74 complaints and zero recalls, which is a much thinner record than the 2011–2014 Fiestas and not the same thing as a clean one. The same three things fill it: the PowerShift automatic still throwing 'Transmission Failure - Service Now' and eating clutches and control modules, a purge valve that sticks open so the car stalls or will not start after fuelling, and a handful of overheating engines with coolant in the cylinders. Ford's extended PowerShift coverage ran to 7 years or 100,000 miles on the clutch, so a 2017 may still be inside it; that is the first call to make. With a manual gearbox and a $100 purge valve on the receipt, this is a cheap, honest small car. With the automatic, it is a gamble that Ford already lost once.
What we checked
Reconciled against public records, 2026-09-25
NHTSA holds 74 owner complaints for the 2017 Ford Fiesta, and no recall campaigns.
A big number here usually means a lot of these were sold, not that it is a bad vehicle — popular models collect more complaints for the same rate of trouble. So the total on its own says little. What is worth reading is the shape of it. 31% of them are about one thing — the engine. That much concentration is a genuine pattern rather than background noise, and it is the first thing to check on any example you look at.
Counts come from the NHTSA complaint and recall database — free, public, and worth checking yourself.
Known Issues for the 2017 Ford Fiesta
Ranked by wallet impact. These are documented, recurring problems — not freak accidents. How we decide that.
22 powertrain complaints on a small record, and every one of them is the DPS6 dual-clutch. Owners describe revs climbing before a hard shift from first to second, a car that will not go into reverse with the transmission warning lit, a control module replaced under warranty that threw the same error a week later and then stalled on the road, and a car that only starts in Neutral. Ford extended clutch coverage to 7 years or 100,000 miles and control-module coverage further under the class-action settlement; a 2017 may still qualify, so have a dealer run the VIN before you assume the cost is yours. On the drive, hold it in stop-and-go traffic and feel for shudder, and try reverse twice from cold.
Repair cost (estimate): $0 if still under Ford's extended coverage; $1,200–$2,200 for a clutch pack; $800–$1,500 for a transmission control module — about 25% of what this car is typically worth

23 engine complaints, two crashes. The serious ones: an engine that overheated on a winter night and would not restart, and a 59,000-mile car misfiring on cylinders one and three because coolant was getting into them, which is a head gasket or cracked head on the 1.6L. One driver at 60 mph had the oil light flash, the engine cut, and the brake pedal go hard because the vacuum assist went with it; that is what an engine stall feels like at speed. The rest is check-engine lights traced to the EVAP purge valve, covered below. Look at the coolant reservoir cold and pull the oil cap: a milky film under it means coolant in the oil and a walk to the next car.
Repair cost (estimate): $1,500–$3,000 for a head gasket or head on the 1.6L — about 34% of what this car is typically worth

Sixteen fuel complaints and the word purge is in fifteen of them. The canister purge valve sticks open, so when you fill the tank fuel vapour floods the intake and the engine stumbles, stalls, or will not catch for a few seconds; the check-engine light shows P0456 or P0457. It is a common fault across Ford's 1.6L cars, and it is a $30 to $60 part that takes ten minutes to change. Ask the seller whether it ever hesitates after a fill-up, and check for a stored EVAP code with a scanner. Cheap to fix, and a seller who has lived with it for a year may not have fixed much else.
Repair cost (estimate): $60–$200

Walk-Away Red Flags
- ✗Shudder in traffic, a hard 1–2 shift, or a yellow wrench on the dash on an automatic
- ✗Seller mentions it hesitates or stalls after filling the tank
- ✗Coolant below the mark, or a milky film under the oil cap
- ✗Check-engine light on, or a fresh clearing that a scanner shows as recent
- ✗Engine that stalls or dies on the test drive, at any speed
Good Signs
- ✓Manual gearbox, with a firm clutch pedal and a bite point that stays put after pumping it
- ✓Clutch pack or control module replaced under Ford's extended coverage, with the dealer invoice and dates
- ✓Purge valve replaced on a receipt, and the car starting cleanly right after a fill-up
- ✓Coolant clean and between the marks when cold, with a pressure test passed
- ✓Twenty minutes of stop-and-go on the test drive with smooth take-up every time
