Kestrel Take
Forty-one complaints in fourteen years is a thin record, and it is not a reliability score — it is a small sample from owners who mostly deal with Lexus dealers, not NHTSA. Of the 41, 26 are the Takata passenger inflator recall, filed while parts were on back order. What is left is worth reading anyway: a sticky, melting dashboard that glares off the windshield, door lock actuators that fail in sets, a convertible top motor that failed twice, and five surge-while-parking reports with three crashes behind them. The 2012 is the next-to-last year of this generation, so the drivetrain faults are the known ones: carbon on the IS250's intake valves and the IS F's valley-plate coolant seal. Check the airbag recall on the VIN, run your hand across the dash, work every lock, and creep through a parking lot with your foot on the brake before you decide.
What we checked
Reconciled against public records, 2026-09-25
NHTSA holds 41 owner complaints for the 2012 Lexus IS, and 2 recall campaigns.
A big number here usually means a lot of these were sold, not that it is a bad vehicle — popular models collect more complaints for the same rate of trouble. So the total on its own says little. What is worth reading is the shape of it. 63% of them are about one thing — airbags. That much concentration is a genuine pattern rather than background noise, and it is the first thing to check on any example you look at.
2 recall campaigns cover this model year. Recalls are repaired free, for any owner, with no time limit on most safety campaigns — but only if someone books it in. Ask the seller to show it was done, or have any dealer check the VIN; it takes them a couple of minutes and costs nothing.
Counts come from the NHTSA complaint and recall database — free, public, and worth checking yourself.
Known Issues for the 2012 Lexus IS
Ranked by wallet impact. These are documented, recurring problems — not freak accidents. How we decide that.
Recall 17V006 covers the 2012 IS250, IS350, both convertibles and the IS F sold or ever registered in the hot, humid Zone A states: the passenger frontal inflator can rupture on deployment and throw metal into the cabin. Most of this cluster is 2017 complaints about parts that had not arrived; one owner in 2022 was still finding out about it while shipping the car home from an overseas posting. A later campaign in this brief extended coverage on some IS variants. The fix is a free inflator or airbag assembly at any Lexus dealer, and the NHTSA VIN lookup will tell you in thirty seconds whether it is open. Four of the 26 are post-crash non-deployment reports, which cannot be inspected for.

Owners describe inching into a space or waiting at a light with the brake down when the engine races and the car jumps a curb, and in one convertible rolled over. One 2022 report adds the brakes applying themselves at speed. Five reports is not a pattern you can put a cause to, but three crashes is enough to take seriously on a test drive. Make sure the driver's floor mat is the clipped Lexus mat with nothing on top of it, check the VIN for any open pedal or mat campaign, then creep through a parking lot in Drive with light brake pressure and watch the tachometer. Any rev you did not ask for is a reason to stop the purchase, not to negotiate.

The soft-touch dash material on this generation of IS breaks down in heat: the surface turns shiny and tacky, leaves residue on anything that touches it, and in strong sun reflects a haze onto the windshield that owners say makes it hard to see out. Door-panel tops go soft and flake with it. Lexus ran a warranty enhancement for these dashboards some years ago; it has ended for most cars, so ask a dealer whether this VIN has anything left rather than assuming. A replacement dash is a full day of labour. Run a finger across the top of the dash on a warm day: if it drags or shines like glass, price the fix into your offer or plan on a dash mat.
Repair cost (estimate): $50–$150 for a dash cover; $1,200–$2,500 for a replacement dashboard

Two owners had every front door lock actuator die, one after already replacing one, and a Lexus service department told them they see more of these than they should — a teenager crawling through the back door to unlock the car is the failure mode. Each actuator is a $150–$350 job at an independent. On the IS250C and IS350C the folding hardtop's motor failed under warranty for one owner and again out of it, and that is a four-figure repair. Press the lock button on the fob and the door switch and watch every door respond; on a convertible, cycle the top twice and time it.
Repair cost (estimate): $150–$350 per door lock actuator; $1,000–$2,500 for a convertible top motor

Neither is in this year's small record but both belong to the engines this car carries. The IS250's 2.5 V6 is direct-injection only, so carbon builds on the intake valves and shows up as a lumpy cold idle, hesitation off the line and eventually a flashing check-engine light with misfire codes; walnut-blasting the valves runs $500–$1,200. The IS F's 5.0 V8 has a coolant crossover under the intake whose factory sealant breaks down, leaving pink residue on the bellhousing and a top-up habit; resealing it means pulling the intake. Start the car cold and listen; on an IS F, look between the engine and the transmission with a flashlight and ask for a resealing invoice.
Repair cost (estimate): $500–$1,200 to clean IS250 intake valves; $2,000–$3,000 for an IS F valley plate
