Kestrel Take
A sixteen-year-old Lexus with 112 complaints on file, and 60% of them are one subject: the Takata passenger airbag inflator, mostly owners writing in because the replacement part took a year to arrive. That is a paperwork problem with a deadly failure behind it, and on a car this old the only question that matters is whether it was ever actually done — the VIN lookup answers it in thirty seconds and you should not buy this car without checking. Past that the record is small and spread thin, which tells you few people filed, not that nothing breaks: a fuel-line campaign, the old floor mat pedal recall, and an engine cluster that splits neatly between the IS F's coolant valley plate and the IS 250's direct-injection carbon. Mechanically these are strong cars; buy the maintenance history, not the badge.
What we checked
Reconciled against public records, 2026-09-25
NHTSA holds 112 owner complaints for the 2010 Lexus IS, and 6 recall campaigns.
A big number here usually means a lot of these were sold, not that it is a bad vehicle — popular models collect more complaints for the same rate of trouble. So the total on its own says little. What is worth reading is the shape of it. 60% of them are about one thing — airbags. That much concentration is a genuine pattern rather than background noise, and it is the first thing to check on any example you look at.
6 recall campaigns cover this model year. Recalls are repaired free, for any owner, with no time limit on most safety campaigns — but only if someone books it in. Ask the seller to show it was done, or have any dealer check the VIN; it takes them a couple of minutes and costs nothing.
Counts come from the NHTSA complaint and recall database — free, public, and worth checking yourself.
Known Issues for the 2010 Lexus IS
Ranked by wallet impact. These are documented, recurring problems — not freak accidents. How we decide that.
Recall 16V340 covers the front passenger airbag inflator on 2006-2011 IS250 and IS350 and 2010-2011 IS250C and IS350C, among a long list of Toyota and Lexus models: the inflator can rupture and throw metal fragments into the cabin. Almost all 67 airbag complaints here are owners saying they were notified, told not to let anyone sit in the passenger seat, and then left waiting months for parts; Toyota kept widening these campaigns by region in the years that followed. Six of the 67 are non-deployment reports after a crash, which no inspection can check. Run the VIN on the NHTSA site and read the answer yourself.

Recall 09V388 is the 2009 Toyota floor mat campaign, covering 2004-2010 vehicles including this one: an unsecured or wrong-size driver's mat can trap the accelerator wide open. Dealers reshaped the pedal and, on some cars, the floor. Ten speed-control complaints sit here and six of them involved a crash — owners describing the car surging while they were braking into a parking space. Look at what is actually on the driver's floor: a stacked aftermarket mat, or an all-weather mat over the original, puts you back where the recall started, whatever the paperwork says.

Recall 14V647 covers 2006-2011 IS vehicles built through September 2010: the sealing at the fuel pressure sensor mounting can degrade and let fuel leak, which near an ignition source is a fire. Dealers clean and reseal the area at no charge. Five fuel-system complaints on this year is a small number, but a fuel leak is not the kind of finding that needs a crowd behind it. With the engine warm and idling, open the hood and smell for gasoline before you talk price; then confirm the campaign by VIN rather than by the seller's memory.

Several of the eight engine complaints are the same well-known 2UR V8 fault, and owners name it directly: the sealant under the coolant valley plate between the cylinder banks breaks down, coolant weeps out over the transmission and the level drops, sometimes from 50,000 miles. Owners quote roughly $2,000 to $3,000 because the intake has to come off to reach it. This is confined to the IS F, so it does not touch an IS 250 or IS 350 at all. On an IS F, get a flashlight into the valley and look at the reservoir level before anything else.
Repair cost (estimate): $2,000–$3,000 — most of it labour to get to the plate — about 29% of what this car is typically worth

One owner here reports a shake, a blinking check engine light and a cylinder-two misfire code, and blames carbon build-up on the valves — that is a fair read of this engine, which sprays fuel into the cylinder rather than over the valve, so nothing washes the intake side clean. It shows up as a rough cold idle, a stumble under load, or a misfire code at 80,000 miles and up. Cleaning means pulling the intake and blasting the valves with walnut shell. Ask whether it has been done; on a car this age it likely needs doing once.
Repair cost (estimate): $500–$1,000 for a walnut-shell intake valve cleaning

Recall 13V030 covers 2006-2012 IS250 and IS350 and 2010-2012 IS250C and IS350C: the wiper arm nuts can loosen so the wipers stop sweeping, which in heavy rain is a real loss of visibility. Lexus dealers fit new nuts free. It is a five-minute fix that gets skipped on older cars because nobody tests wipers on a dry day. Run them on the test drive, on every speed, and watch whether the arms judder or stall part way across the glass.
